Route 9 opens reconnecting Brattleboro, Wilmington, Bennington

first_imgThe Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) opened Route 9 Friday to full public travel, restoring a critical east-west travel corridor that is vital to safety, mobility and state commerce.  The agency today also reopened a bridge along Route 30 at the Dummerston and Newfane town line. The opening reestablishes public access along Route 30 as far northwest as Jamaica, where the road remains closed due to storm damage that is still under repair. Tropical Storm Irene caused considerable damage along Route 9, knocking out a bridge in Woodford and washing away several roadway segments between Marlboro and West Brattleboro. Route 9 through the heart of Wilmington also received considerable damage. As a result, the entire 35-mile stretch of Route 9 between Woodford and West Brattleboro was closed. “Travel between Bennington and Brattleboro since the storm has been challenging as the detours were exceptionally long,” said Gil Newbury, incident commander for VTrans recovery efforts across southeast Vermont. “Reopening Route 9 allows not only residents but businesses to return to something that is close to normal.”Motorists using Route 9 should expect delays in and around Wilmington as well as throughout the seven-mile stretch between Marlboro and West Brattleboro where crews are still conducting repairs and much of the once paved roadway is now gravel. The speed limit, normally 50 mph through much of this stretch, has been reduced to 35 mph for safety reasons.  VTrans is advising commercial traffic that is through traffic to use the Massachusetts Turnpike or MA Route 2 to the south as travel on Route 9 will be slow and rough in places.Route 9 is the latest major east-west roadway to reopen since the storm closed more than 450 miles of Vermont State Highway on August 28. In less than two weeks, state work crews in conjunction with dozens of private contractors and hundreds of National Guard troops also have restored services to Route 103 between Rockingham and Rutland, as well as Route 11 between Chester and Manchester. The remaining major east-west corridor that remains closed is Route 4 between Rutland and Woodstock. VTrans, baring some unforeseen setback, anticipates opening this vital stretch of roadway next weekend. “Reestablishing east-west mobility is vital to both our safety and to our economy,” said VTrans Secretary Brian Searles. “From day one, reopening these roads was one of our top priorities. But as good as today’s news is, everyone needs to remember that many of our reopened roads are still under construction. If you do not need to be on them, please don’t be. And if you do use them, drive with caution and leave additional time to reach your destination.”The effort to reopen Route 9 involved crews of more than 75 workers from not only VTrans but the Vermont National Guard and several private contractors, including Deloury Construction, C. J. Weaver Excavating, Zaluzny Excavating, Berard’s Excavating, Eilers Brothers Trucking and Construction, Brown Logging and Chipping, Cold River Construction, and Kubricky Construction Corp.last_img read more

It also informed why the President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, wrote a letter of gratitude to IBB Club for the visit,” Abbo said.Abbo, who offered to pass some invaluable advice to some of the candidates likely to succeed him at the club’s AGM billed for April 30, said apart from Ghana, Abuja has already instituted matches with East Africa nations.“We have been to Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda. How Does the Web Feel? Evri’s New Sentiment API Tells You

first_imgWhy Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting sarah perez Of course, this is just a simple example of the Evri API in action. We’re sure the developers out there can think up even better ideas than this.Challenges AheadThe challenge now for Evri is to keep expanding its index in order to track more sources to rank. At the moment, the engine doesn’t track a large slice of the web the way a typical search engine like Google does – in fact they don’t even claim to be a search engine…despite what that “Go to” box on their homepage would have you believe. Instead, Evri looks specifically at the people, places, and things on the web and maps the connections between them. To determine these connections – and now, the associated sentiments as well – Evri pulls from a limited number of “highly regarded” sources. That means you’ll definitely see a site like CNN used to rank a person like Obama, but the myriad of tiny politico blogs will be ignored. That’s actually a shame, since delving into this “long tail” of the web could give a better overall picture of how all people really feel, not just the sentiments expressed on high-profile sites written by top bloggers and journalists. Still, we know indexing and parsing this long tail is something that’s much easier said than done. In the end, what Evri’s doing, even on this smaller scale, is definitely interesting. We hope to see the new API put to good use in the near future. When you click on any one of the associated topics (or click on “anything” to see all topics of either positive or negative slant), you’re then presented with a sidebar of information. Here, snippets from articles found on the web display along with a title, link, and timestamp. Semantic search engine Evri can now understand how the web feels with the launch of their new sentiment web API. While busy scouring the net for people, places, and things and determining the relationships between them, the search engine is now able to understand the feelings associated with these entities, too, be them positive or negative. Using the API, developers can build applications for things like market intelligence, market research, sports and entertainment, brand management, product reviews and more. Not Just Good or Bad, but Who, What, and Why, TooAt first we thought Evri’s API would simply rank things as positive or negative, much like the Twitter tracker twendz does today, highlighting positive, negative, and neutral items. However, the sentiment API does so much more, allowing you deeper insight into the “who’s,” and “what’s,” and “why’s” associated with the particular expression or feeling. To be more specific, according to the announcement, Evri lets you: Find the percentage of positive and negative expressions of sentiment made by an entity, or about an entity. For example, find out what percentage of things being written about the iPhone are positive and which percent are negative. Discover who is criticizing and who is praising a particular person, place or thing. For example, see who is criticizing and praising Microsoft right now. Read whatpraisers and critics are saying about an entity. For example, see what the GOP are saying about the Democrats. Discover who or what your favorite entity is bashing and why. For example, see who Lance Armstrong is complaining about. Discover who or what your favorite entity is praising and why. For example, see who the World Health Organization is commending and why. When unleashed upon the web as a whole, this could unearth a veritable goldmine of information. Just thinking of how many different ways it could be used is enough to blow anyone’s mind. Of course, marketers will be the first to jump on board, looking for practical ways to track the feelings about their companies, clients, and brands and why they’re changing, but an engine that understands sentiment could do so much more than just this. It can literally take the pulse of the web the way we take the pulse of Twitter using apps like the above-mentioned twendz to rank trends as positive or negative. Demo: The “Vibology Meter”To demonstrate what Evri can do, the company created a widget called the “Vibology Meter.” (Sadly, no link is provided). The widget not only ranks the good or bad “vibes” about a particular entity (in the example, Barack Obama), but also explores topics associated with that entity and whether or not the primary entity feels positively or negatively towards them. For example, the widget shows Obama is negative towards the GOP and Rush Limbaugh but feels positive about Michele Obama. The only way you do that and go to the SEA Games and put another great effort and do our best to win a gold medal,” he said. With the Philippines relegated to the classification phase for fifth to eighth place in the Asian championship, the SEA Games roster knows that the pressure is now on them as they eye to win the gold medal for the 18th time.“It’s our turn for redemption,” said Amer. “We have to defend our kuyas. We know the weight they are carrying because all of us are watching them. So with the SEA Games, we know all eyes will now be on us. We just want to help them and protect our fort. All we want when we come home here is that we’re all going to be happy.”ADVERTISEMENT Amer wasn’t only one who went to bed in a gloomy mood as thousands of Filipinos stayed up late only to witness the national team fail to advance past the quarterfinals. What made the defeat tougher to swallow was it came at the hands of its fierce rival Koreans, who continued to own the Philippines’ number in continental tournaments.FEATURED STORIESSPORTSWATCH: Drones light up sky in final leg of SEA Games torch runSPORTSSEA Games: Philippines picks up 1st win in men’s water poloSPORTSMalditas save PH from shutoutThe Philippines has a chance to avenge that failed bid in Fiba Asia with a strong showing in the 2017 Southeast Asian Games, which will be represented by the younger members of the Gilas Pilipinas pool. And that’s actually one of the the motivations for the SEA Games-bound Gilas crew. first_imgCrystal Palace boss Hodgson can’t fault players for Watford defeatby Paul Vegas9 months agoSend to a friendShare the loveCrystal Palace boss Roy Hodgson couldn’t fault his players after defeat to Watford. The Eagles were winning 1-0 at the break thanks to Craig Cathcart’s own goal, but would see that quickly turned around thanks to two goals in seven minutes as Cathcart gained some retribution before a fine volley from Tom Cleverley settled matters in south London.Hodgson said, “It’s tough to lose any game, especially at home and it’s made tougher that we’ve been doing quite well lately. I was hoping that this would be the chance for us to get that elusive third victory that would have lifted us to a much more comfortable place in the table.“We were unable to get it, and when that happens there is no other emotion that I can display other than the obvious one of feeling very sad that we couldn’t do it.”He added: “If you want to win games, then you have to take the chances that come your way. Watford must be comfortable in that respect because they hit the post twice and had one cleared off the line and chances to score their two goals. We perhaps weren’t as effective and only scored one goal, but that’s what football is.“There aren’t many games this year where I have thought we were outplayed or didn’t deserve to win, but there have been games like this where the game could so easily have gone either way and you get questions about regrets or frustrations. I don’t think I could have asked for a lot more from the players; we certainly didn’t lose the game because there wasn’t the desire to win it.” About the authorPaul VegasShare the loveHave your saylast_img read more

HLine Shipping Eyes Construction of LNGFueled Bulker

first_imgzoom South Korean shipping company H-Line Shipping is teaming up with industry partners and the government on the design and construction of an LNG-fueled 80,000 dwt bulk carrier. The project is part of a government initiative aimed at providing support for the introduction of LNG-powered ships in the country and revitalizing its shipbuilding sector which was badly hit by the industry slump. The Korean government plans to provide financial backing for the introduction of LNG-powered ships, as a way of speeding up the uptake of the technology, especially in the wake of ever more stringent environmental regulations, including the IMO 2020 Sulfur cap. The move is expected to bridge the 20 pct cost gap between investment into vessels with standard engines and those equipped with LNG tanks.H-Line Shipping will be joined by KOGAS, POSCO Terminal Co, and Kore South-East Power, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF) said. The coalition is scheduled to ink a collaboration agreement with MOF and Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy on December 13.The deal will serve as the starting point for a feasibility study on the design and construction of the LNG-fuelled bulker, and if all goes well, H-Line Shipping will move forward with the ordering of the construction of a bulk carrier featuring the design in 2018.The feasibility study is expected to be completed in the first half of next year.World Maritime News Stafflast_img read more
