Australian channel apologises for ‘racist’ rugby video

first_imgThe clip, on the popular Fox Sports Matty Johns Show, showed small children attempting to pronounce the ‘funniest’ player names in the NRL (National Rugby League), most of which being Pacific Islander surnames, 9News network reports. But the “Footy Kids in Cars” video has not gone down well with players. Former Samoa international Frank Puletua told 9News he was “disappointed that a segment like that got to air without any sort of thought about how it might be perceived by people in Pacific Island league communities.”Most vocal was Anastastia Nimo Tagataese, wife of current player Sam Tagataese, who wrote in a Facebook post that “casual racism is not OK”.Writing that she believed there was no malice intended in the video, she told her social media followers that “having parents laugh with their children because they are unable to pronounce Pacific Islander surnames is completely disrespectful”.Not innocent funNigel Vagana, who has represented both New Zealand and Samoa as well as serving a stint for the Warrington Wolves in the UK, criticised any idea that the segment was innocent fun, saying that such things could normalise abuse against Polynesian children in schools.”Are we saying it’s alright for those kids to go to school and be mocked by their surname because it was okay on TV the night before?” he asked New Zealand’s Stuff news website.Addressing the incident on his Monday night show, Matty Johns said “it was never the intention to disrespect anybody, particularly people in the Polynesian community.”I’d like to apologise for any hurt or offence we have caused, and we have caused offence and we have caused hurt and I acknowledge that,” quoted the Fox Sports presenter as saying. A wish for Taumalolo respect

first_imgPhoto by: BRADLEY KANARIS/ GETTY IMAGES (Caption: Jason Taumalolo – pictured playing his last test for the Kiwis – has been accused by NZ coach David Kidwell of ‘a lack of respect’) Kiwis coach David Kidwell has accused Jason Taumalolo of a lack of respect after his controversial decision to switch allegiance to Tonga.Taumalolo – rated the best forward in world rugby league – opted to play for Tonga at the Rugby League World Cup after 10 caps for the Kiwis.Kidwell told the Brisbane Courier Mail newspaper that Taumalolo’s actions still rankled and he said there were no guarantees the North Queensland Cowboys star would play for the Kiwis again. His comments are sure to add fuel to the fire when the Kiwis face Tonga in Hamilton on November 11.David Kidwell is not sure whether the Kiwis will take Jason Taumalolo back after he chose to play for Tonga at the World Cup.”The issue I have is I would have liked Jason to tell me to my face [that he was switching to Tonga],” Kidwell said.”I can understand why he wanted to play for Tonga and represent his heritage but I just wished he showed me some respect.”I found out that he wanted to play for Tonga from a third party. He never told me – I still haven’t heard from him or spoken to him.”I’m not going to have any ill-feeling towards Jason but if he explained things to me, I would have at least sat down and said, ‘OK, what are your reasons?’.”I would never step in someone’s way of representing another country if that player doesn’t feel connected to the New Zealand jumper.”I have 24 guys in this team now who feel they belong to the Kiwis and will play for the jumper. That’s the attitude I want.”The Courier Mail said it was understood some Kiwis players were “bitterly disappointed” with Taumalolo.Kidwell admitted he still did not know “why he doesn’t want to play for us”.”If he has an issue with me, I’m not aware of it. I coached Jason when he was in the Junior Kiwis.”If there is an issue, I just wanted him to see me and tell me how he was feeling. I’m an open book. I’m not closed. I’d like to think I have a mindset where I listen to people. It won’t be up to me whether Jason plays for New Zealand again. It won’t be the selectors either.”It will be players. I’m trying to shape our culture at the moment and they are the ones driving it.”Kiwis skipper Adam Blair told the Courier Mail that while he was surprised at Taumalolo’s decision, he and his teammates were looking ahead to their first World Cup game against Samoa on Saturday.”Our focus is on the players that want to represent our country. The media keeps bringing it up, but we’ve put the Taumalolo stuff behind us.”last_img read more

Coates would be “very surprised” if IOC opts to overturn ban on Russia

first_imgCoates, seen as a close ally of IOC President Thomas Bach, said he would be “very, very surprised” if the IOC overturned the decision of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF).”It’s an International Federation’s right to suspend a National Federation and I don’t think we would overturn that at all,” he said. The Australian, who has described the Russian testing system as “rotten to the core”, also welcomed similar investigations now taking place within other sports. This comes after the IAAF Council decided unanimously yesterday against lifting the ban due to a Russian failure to meet criteria required by the body’s Task Force.Only Russians who can prove they have been operating in an “effective testing system” will be permitted to compete as independent athletes – with this essentially meaning only those who have been based outside of the country. The IOC have generally been seen as opposed to the suspension, partly to provide all countries with a right to participate and partly in order to maintain their close political relations with Russia. An Olympic Stakeholders Summit is due to be held in Lausanne on Tuesday (June 21) with the aim of finding a compromise between “collective responsibility and individual justice”.last_img read more
