With the win, Drake (3-3) finished third in the eight-team field.Drake’s defense led the way, holding Pepperdine (2-4) to just 38.5 percent shooting on the night and 26.9 percent in the second half. Drake converted on 55.6 percent of its shots and 58.3 percent from the three-point arc in addition to holding a 10-rebound advantage.”We held them to 27 percent in the second half and now you’re starting to get to numbers where you can win basketball games,” said Drake head coach Ray Giacoletti. “Those numbers don’t lie. We had 16 assists, we shared the basketball and we have good players that need to continue to make each other better.”The Waves were led by 13 points from Stacy Davis while their other top scorer, Lamond Murray, Jr., scored six points. Both Davis and Murray entered the contest averaging 15.0 points per game.Graham Woodward (Edina, Minn.) and Kale Abrahamson (West Des Moines, Iowa) each added 13 points for the Bulldogs. Guard C.J. Rivers (Cahokia, Ill.) led the rebounding charge with eight boards to match a career high.Drake rolled out to an early 13-6 lead and led for all but 1:42 of the first half as Timmer scored 14 of his points in the opening period. The Bulldogs extended their lead to 10, 47-37, in the first five minutes of the second half. Seven minutes later, a 7-0 run capped by a Timmer three-point play put the Bulldogs up 15 points, 59-44, with 7:42 left. Pepperdine would get no closer than 13 points for the remainder of the contest and suffered a two-minute scoring drought in the final four minutes as Drake’s defense continue to clamp down on the Waves.Drake leaves Florida with a 2-1 record in three days including a win over WKU.
