Education Minister Karen Casey has stepped in to restructure the Strait Regional School Board today, in the interests of students and staff. “This is not a step I take lightly,” said Ms. Casey. “But after meeting with board members directly on Wednesday, I have formed the opinion that the board is not managing its duties under the Education Act in a responsible manner.” Effective immediately, the minister is exercising her authority under section 68 of the Education Act to remove the board’s powers over human resources and financial management, while leaving the board intact. John Sears, a former professor and vice-president academic at St. Francis Xavier University, has been appointed by the minister to carry out the human resources and financial management responsibilities of the board. It is expected that he will form an advisory group of former board chairs to assist him. “Dr. Sears is widely regarded as a person of integrity and competence who has served this province admirably over many years,” said Ms. Casey. “I am very pleased that he has agreed to take on this responsibility at my request.” School board elections are scheduled across Nova Scotia for October. It is anticipated that the new board will resume its full responsibilities at that time.
