Cuba begins clinical trial of HIV vaccine

first_imgA therapeutic vaccine aimed at reducing the viral load of patients with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), is currently in phase one of a clinical trial, in which its safety is studied.According to Yayri Caridad Prieto Correa, a researcher from the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB) here said that the nine patients involved in the trial did not show any adverse effects or toxicity, which is the main objective of the phase. After preclinical studies in laboratory animals, and tests in the small group of humans, it was shown that the immune response of the organism is enhanced thanks to the use of the vaccine, although Prieto Correa insisted on not creating false expectations. She told the Cuban News Agency that this is a multi-year project, and will take time which will include testing phases with a greater number of seropositives in which large-scale and comprehensive efficacy will be tested to determine whether or not to continue with its use.last_img read more

Broward County working with State to identify any presence of Red…

first_imgThe Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has verified the presence of the red tide forming algae, Karenia Brevis (K.Brevis), in coastal waters of Palm Beach and Miami-Dade counties at low to moderate concentrations.Respiratory discomforts in BrowardWhile analyses are still pending in Broward County, several recent reports of respiratory discomfort by beach visitors in Broward County suggest that the K. Brevis organism is also present in coastal waters of Broward County, likely at similar concentrations. Broward County is coordinating with the FWC to perform county-wide water quality monitoring to confirm the presence and concentration of K. Brevis in coastal waters. Results of this sampling will be made public as soon as results are available. If confirmed, this coordination and monitoring will continue until no presence of the algae is detected. Karenia Brevis algaeThe red tide is produced by the algae Karenia Brevis, naturally occurring in the saline waters of the Gulf of Mexico.  This algae is rare on the East Coast as it prefers the calmer waters of the Gulf.  However, of the 57 occurrences of red tide in the Gulf of Mexico since 1953, eight of these events have brought the red tide organism to the east coast of Florida via the Loop Current and Gulf Stream.  None of these events resulted in large-scale blooms. There are currently no beach closures within Broward County; however, local municipalities are being proactive with the posting of cautionary signage informing the public about the potential presence of red tide.  The FWC advises beachgoers to use their best judgment when visiting a beach impacted by red tide. According to State Health officials, low and moderate concentrations can produce allergy-like symptoms, such as scratchy throat or watery eyes. Individuals with respiratory conditions, such as asthma or COPD, should take measures to reduce exposure. We might also expect an increase in local fish kills. Persons who bathe in the ocean should limit bathing during and rise off.Red tide can last for a few weeks to longer than a year, but is not known to persist on the east coast. Sunlight, nutrients and salinity, all play a role, as well as the speed and direction of wind and water currents.  Based on experience, we anticipate that the dynamic conditions of the east coast will serve as a control limiting the presence, persistence, and concentration of the organism in our nearshore waters. For more information on red tide conditions locally and around the state, follow this link to FWC’s website: http://myfwc.com/research/redtide/To report a fish kill, call FWC’s fish kill hotline: 1-800-636-0511.last_img read more

The power of sports and the Diaspora

first_imgJamaica’s senior schoolboy football competitions have enjoyed a long and envious history dating back to its inaugural staging in 1909.Back then the secondary schools across the island with active teams contested the Jamaica Inter-Scholastic Association Football Shield competition for the Olivier Shield on a knockout basis. But four years later there was a rethink by the schools in the urban area which required a change of format to guarantee more games on a home and away basis. However, this proposed change in format would have significantly affected the lone rural based team, Potsdam, which was located in St Elizabeth, and is now known as Munro College.Manning and DaCosta Cup launched in 1913During a meeting of the representatives held at Kingston’s Sabina Park in late 1913, it was decided to establish two new competitions – the Manning Cup named after then Governor of the island, Sir William Henry Manning, who endorsed it – and the DaCosta Cup for the rural schools. These competitions were based on a home and away format with the teams amassing the most points emerging as champions. The two winners would then contest the Olivier Shield.Originally 5 schools in Manning CupIn the inaugural edition in 1914, five schools entered the Manning Cup – Jamaica College, Wolmer’s Boys’ School, Calabar High, St George’s College and New College. An awful lot has changed since 1914.Today 130 schools in Manning and DaCosta CupToday there are 42 schools participating in the Manning Cup and 88 in the DaCosta Cup. Additionally, over the years, sponsorships have grown steadily and substantially, with this year’s sponsors, communications giant Digicel announcing a $75 million package over three years for the Manning and Walker Cup (knock out) and Wisynco putting up $100 million for the same period for the DaCosta Cup and Ben Francis Cup Knockout. And while the competitions largely remain part of the Inter-Secondary Schools’ extra-curricular activities, with the enormous financial backing of some of these schools’ alumni, one can’t help but observe the establishment of football academies.Jamaica College sets trend For the past five years Jamaica College, the most successful school with 29 Manning Cup titles, has proven the best of the lot behind some enormous financial muscle.Theirs is an operation akin to a professional outfit, what with high profile backroom staff, which includes a head coach, goalkeeper coach, medical team, physical trainer, masseur, and other support staff often absent from the nation’s top flight semi-professional clubs in the Red Stripe Premier League. Some schools are now sporting training kits.Make no mistake about it, Jamaica College is not the only school to expend that kind of money on its football programs, and track and field programs.Schools such as St. George’s College, Wolmer’s Boys’, Kingston College and Calabar High, among others, competing in the urban area Manning Cup, and Cornwall College, St. Elizabeth Technical High, Clarendon College, Rusea’s, Vere Technical, Dinthill, are similarly financed by their alumni.Financial support from Diaspora alumniIn fact, such is the strong financial backing of these alumni, many of whom are based in the Diaspora, that any school wishing to genuinely challenge for the titles expend in excess of $10 million for the season which lasts for three months. But why do these alumni provide so much money for their schools’ sports programs? And is it worth it and is this sustainable in Jamaica’s current tight fiscal space. It is believed that these alumni’s primary reward is bragging rights, pure and simple. As they engage in good-natured banter with their peers in the corporate corridors. But inevitably, in a twisted and unwitting manner, the financial support to the schools by these alumni actually play an integral part in helping some of these student/athletes to further themselves through college scholarships and even sporting success. So though on the surface, it appears that these past students dig into their pockets for a selfish reason – their alma mater – their actions highlight the power of sports in today’s Jamaica, and to many their efforts are well worth it.Long may their benevolence continue.last_img read more

Barbados Government Promises Rastafarians 60 Acres of Land to Grow Marijuana

first_imgBRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC – The Barbados government has promised to give members of the Rastafarian movement at least 60 acres of land for its members to grow marijuana legally.Agriculture Minister Indar Weir, speaking in parliament on Friday, is also promising the group that it would play a major role in establishing a medicinal cannabis industry.Weir said the government has met on numerous occasions with at least two groups representing the Rastafarian community and agreed they would be included in the industry.“There have been absolutely good cooperation between myself at the Ministry and potential interest groups; I speak to the Rastafarian movement of Barbados.“I have met with two different groups and I want to make it clear that we have indicated to them that they will be a part of this industry and that every effort will be made to make sure they are included, so we did consult with them,” he said, noting that the latest round of talks this week dealt “how we would go forward and in terms of how we can work together.“We have already made provisions for them to have access to land as well so that 60 acres of land being made available in Barbados to the Rastafarian community is the first step towards ensuring that they will not be left out of this.”Earlier this week, the president of the African Heritage Foundation, Paul Ras Simba Rock, urged the Mia Mottley government to allow Rastafarians to use marijuana for religious purposes. But Weir told legislators that the proposed legislation spoke only to the use of medicinal cannabis.“I feel the responsibility to make sure that we make it absolutely clear that what we are dealing with here is medicinal cannabis and we ought not to introduce the confusion that most people seem to be going through with regard to what is the decriminalization of recreational cannabis.“In presenting this to the Cabinet of Barbados, I also raised that we ought to be very, very, clear with this conversation.”In his presentation on the Medical Cannabis Bill 2019, Weir said that Barbadians would benefit from the establishment of a medical cannabis industry and that any foreign investors interested in becoming involved in the industry would have to allow Barbadians to own 30 percent of its business.“This is designed to make sure every last Barbadian is given a chance to participate. We’re not just singling out one group, but that every group that has an interest will be part of this industry.Weir also gave the assurance that the industry would be heavily monitored, with a solid and strict licensing regime. He said licences will be required for cultivation, research and development, laboratory, processing, retail and distribution, import and export and transport. The bill contains criminal sanctions for misuse of the drug. These include a fine of 15 times the value of the medicinal cannabis, imprisonment of ten years, or both.Meanwhile, leader of the opposition Democratic Labour Party (DLP), Verla DePeiza, is brushing aside the government’s “conversation” regarding the marijuana industry. She told the Barbados TODAY online publication, legalization of medicinal marijuana should have occurred as early as the 1970s and cautioned the government to tread carefully as it attempted to dispense its most recent piece of legislation on the matter.“The words pharmacy and dispensary both appear in the legislation. The word ‘pharmacy’ is defined in the Pharmacy Act and requires a license, a professional designation and all of that. But what is a dispensary, especially since the Pharmacy Act also has something separate called a dispensary?” she asked.According to DePeiza, any “confusion” on such important parts of the legislation could have dangerous consequences.“We need to be really clear about what we are intending to do. If at this stage we are only talking about its medicinal purposes, then it needs to be managed by the medical profession. If we are speaking about commercial enterprise, then that is another story,” she added.last_img read more

first_imgShare Stephen Power @racingbloggerSBC has called upon the @racingblogger to take the Tipster Challenge at Hereford. Stephen Power has stepped up to the plate to provide his expert tips for today’s seven-race card.Power will be going up against the seventh placed Timeform and Stephen Harris, the Horse Racing Guru at bettingexpert, who currently sits in 10th place in the table after 12 weeks of action. So far no-one has got within five points of Alan Alger’s 11.41-point total at Fontwell on October 19. Can Stephen turn on the ‘power’ at Hereford to rival the PR Manager from Betway?____________________________________12:55bettingexpert: Storm AlertHails from a small yard hitting top form and might improve a chunk for his recent seasonal reappearance.Timeform: That’s Gonna StingFailed to follow up his Ludlow success unpenalised at Taunton last month, yet he may well have found that coming too soon, and given more time ahead of this he may well have more to offer.Racing Blogger: StauntonStaunton is having only his 3rd run over hurdles in a handicap hurdle. Stepping back up to 3m 1f today should see him improve further and go close in a very tricky opener.____________________________________1:25bettingexpert: CanoodleMade a good start to hurdling at Uttoxeter and the winner has franked the form in defeat in better class.Timeform: Miss Night OwlShaped with plenty of promise when 1¼ lengths second to Ruby Yeats on hurdles debut at Southwell last month and is expected to reverse the form with that rival now on revised terms.Racing Blogger: CanoodleCanoodle ran a beautiful race on his novice hurdle debut, and should improve a lot for that experience and go close today at Hereford.____________________________________1:55bettingexpert: CharmixShaped well at Bangor last time out behind Potters Legend and will appreciate the drying ground expected here.Timeform: NesterenkoSigned off his time with Nicky Henderson with a win over hurdles at Warwick in May and he gets the narrow vote to make a winning chase debut for his new stable.Racing Blogger: CharmixThe highest rated runner in this race has been disappointing over fences so far. However, his trainer Harry Fry is a master at getting horses to improve. If Charmix improves his jumping, he will go very close.____________________________________2:25bettingexpert: YourholidayisoverA smooth traveller who usually fades off the bridle, but might have a fast run race to suit here, and gets lumps of weight off the favourite Working Title.Timeform: FieldsofsilkMade a promising chase debut when third at Carlisle, and can find the required improvement to beat the veteran Working Title, who carries a penalty for his Sedgefield success.Racing Blogger: FieldsofsilkFieldsofsilk is having only his 2nd run over fences. He’s a very lightly raced five-year-old who can only improve.____________________________________2:55bettingexpert: Keeper HillImpressed when landing hefty cash at Bangor and can defy a penalty in a competitive novice at Hereford.Timeform: JamesonMade an encouraging start over hurdles when runner-up at Ffos Las and can go one place better with plenty of improvement forthcoming.Racing Blogger: JamesonJameson from the all-conquering Nicky Henderson yard should pay his way this year over hurdles. A lovely first run finishing 2nd over 2m; the step up to 2m 3f today and the booking of champion Irish jockey Davy Russel should ensure a huge run.____________________________________3:25bettingexpert: Strong PursuitMade all at a brisk pace last time and will take plenty of catching round this sharp track in decent ground.Timeform: Strong PursuitAfter an impressive success at Wincanton, he can go on improving.Racing Blogger: Strong PursuitLooks a serious horse in this company today. He absolutely destroyed his rivals at Wincanton last time out in serious style. It will be a shock if he is beaten today for Champion jockey Richard Johnson.____________________________________3:55bettingexpert: Keel HaulBack hurdling from a fair mark and should go very close with conditions ideal under Richard Johnson.Timeform: Stage OneAlmost certainly ahead of his mark now going handicapping and could strike at the first time of asking here.Racing Blogger: Bobble EmeraldBobble Emerald ran a beautiful race at Cheltenham last timeout in a 0-140.
