President says judiciary now independent

President Maithripala Sirisena says recent rulings by the Court proves that the judiciary in Sri Lanka is now independent.Speaking at an event today, the President said that the ruling on the Central Province Chief Minister Sarath Ekanayake and the former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa proves there is no Government influence in the judiciary. President Maithripala Sirisena said that recently he had met a group of judges and they had told him that the judges do not get directions from the Government anymore. (Colombo Gazette) The Court had recently ruled against moves to remove Ekanayake and also arrest Rajapaksa in two separate cases.
