Of the 384 trained workers, 27 have already got jobs in different areas. To a query on the low number of beedi workers opting for training, he said nearly 80 per cent of beedi workers in the State are aged above 40 years. Earlier skill training programmes were limited to those in the age group of 18-34 years. The government has decided to relax the age limit for beedi workers, he added.Stating that many beedi workers find it difficult to attend training programmes in a specified skill training centre, he said there are plans to provide training in organic farming at their place. This will also help them take up organic farming in their vicinity.Shekar said the Labour Welfare Organisation had organised a one-day workshop for beedi workers in Mangaluru on Monday. Around 40 women beedi workers attended the workshop.Trainers from ILO (International Labour Organisation) visited the houses of these beedi workers the day before the workshop to assess their working conditions. The workers were also asked to make small changes in their work environment to reduce fatigue and improve their health condition, he said. Modi makes it possible is BJPs slogan for 2019 polls says Jaitley

first_imgnational politics SHARE SHARE EMAIL SHARE March 14, 2019 Prime Minister Narendra Modi Published on BJP COMMENT Highlights India being a ‘sweet spot’ in the global economy and the fastest growing major economy in the world Seeking to encash Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s image of a doer, BJP has chosen the slogan of ‘Modi Hai to Mumkin Hai’ — ‘Modi makes it possible’ for the upcoming general elections, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said Thursday.Modi, he added, has demonstrated during the last five years indefatigability by literally working round-the-clock, Jaitley said in the ‘Agenda 2019 — Part-4’ blogpost. He further said Modi as a quick learner has demonstrated his ability to take quick decisions on complicated matters with clarity and determination.“His image as a doer is now recognised by most Indians. Many India observers across the world have marvelled with India’s pace of taking decisions and implementing them. The BJP, therefore, has chosen an effective slogan for the forthcoming elections ‘Modi Hai to Mumkin Hai’ — ‘Modi makes it possible’,” said Jaitley, who is also in-charge of the publicity division of BJP for 2019 general elections.Global sweet spotRecalling some landmark achievements of the government, he said for the first time for five years in a row, India has remained the fastest growing major economy in the world and also a ‘sweet spot’ in the global economy.“It is both the motivation and the leadership which made the vital difference. It is precisely for this reason that India will witness an election where people will get an opportunity to endorse Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, decisiveness, integrity and performance. Indeed he makes it possible,” the finance minister said.Among other things, Jaitley also said during Modi’s premiership, India demonstrated through surgical strike of 2016 and air-strike of 2019 against Pakistan that it was willing to adopt unconventional methods of attacking terror at the point of its origin.Benign inflationThe other achievements of the government, he said, were bringing down inflation from 10.4 per cent during the UPA regime to 2.5 per cent presently, running an honest government and providing 10 per cent reservation in public employment and educational institutions for economically weaker sections in unreserved category. The government, he said, has also provided income support to poor farmers and pension scheme for the unorganised labour in the country.Social WelfareOther achievements of the government were the smoothest implementation of GST, free medical treatment to the poor under Ayushman Bharat scheme and 100 per cent electrification of all households, he said.“The above is only an illustrative list of the kinds of strides India is making. Has any government done more? It was the same governmental machinery, the same political system, the same implementation instruments that the government had at its disposal. It is both the motivation and the leadership which made the vital difference,” Jaitley said. national elections COMMENTSlast_img read more

Ayodhya case Litigant moves Supreme Court demanding early hearingAyodhya case Litigant moves

first_imgPublished on One of the original litigants in the Ayodhya land dispute case on Tuesday moved the Supreme Court seeking early hearing of the matter. The litigant said nothing much has been happening in the case which was referred to a three-member panel of mediators. The panel, formed to explore an amicable solution, is headed by former apex court judge Justice FMI Kalifulla.A Bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi was told by senior advocate PS Narsimha, appearing for litigant Gopal Singh Visharad, that the title dispute was required to be listed for urgent hearing before the court. The senior lawyer said that “nothing much has been happening” in the case.“Have you filed an application for early hearing?” the Bench asked. The counsel replied in the affirmative.A five-judge Constitution Bench headed by the CJI had, in May, extended till August 15 the time for the panel of mediators to complete the proceedings. It said the panel had submitted that it was “optimistic” about an amicable solution. “If the mediators are optimistic about the result and are seeking time till August 15, what is the harm in granting time? This issue has been pending for years,” the Bench had told the counsel appearing for the parties concerned. SHARE SHARE EMAIL COMMENT July 09, 2019 SHARE COMMENTSlast_img read more

New Zealands first gun buyback event a success police say

first_imgMELBOURNE (Reuters) – Police on Saturday labelled New Zealand’s first firearms buy-back event a success, after 169 individuals handed in 224 prohibited firearms in the city of Christchurch. It comes four months after the country’s worst peacetime mass shooting, which killed 51 people and injured dozens in attacks on two mosques in the city. The event was the first of 258 planned until the end of the year, to compensate owners of powerful, but newly banned, semi-automatic weapons following the attacks. The attitude of firearm owners who participated was “outstanding,” police official Mike Johnson said in a statement. But the outcome was good and they handled it well,” the paper quoted him as saying.Police said gun owners were compensated with a total of NZ$433,682 ($290,133) on Saturday. The government has set aside NZ$208 million ($139.15 million) for the scheme.Parliament passed the gun reform law – the first substantial changes to New Zealand’s gun laws in decades – by a vote of 119 to 1 in April. The new laws bar the circulation and use of most semi-automatic firearms, parts that convert firearms into semi-automatics, magazines over a certain capacity and some shotguns. With a population of just under 5 million and an estimated total of 1.5 million firearms, New Zealand ranks 17th in the world in terms of civilian firearm ownership, the Small Arms Survey shows. Prior to this sudden bullish development, Elsoft’s technical outlook was not showing the best fortunes. The stock had been on a decline since falling off a peak of RM1.48 on Nov 21, 2018.The protracted downtrend meant the the moving averages had taken on negative crossings, which remain unresolved, and continue to suggest weakness in the overall price trend. For the short-term however, the rally remains intact given the improving momentum, and the positive sentiment has yet to subside despite the profit-taking that saw the counter close with a mere one sen gain yesterday. Looking at the technical indicators, the slow-stochastic momentum index has spiked up closer to overbought conditions at 78 points. The sharp vertical rise indicates that the growth may continue in extended overbought mode. The 14-day relative strength index has also risen to overbought conditions at 85 points and looks headed for more extreme trading conditions. The daily moving average convergence/divergence line has risen sharply off the signal line in a sign that the uptrend has firmed. At present, the 200-day SMA continues to be a stiff hurdle for the share price, as reflected in Friday’s profit-taking.Should this hurdle be surpassed however, the share price will target RM1.17.The 100-day SMA is a resistance-turned-support at 93 sen while lower still, support can be found near the convergence of rising short-term SMAs at 81 sen.The comments above do not represent a recommendation to buy or sell.
