Canadas inflation is up but retail sales are down

OTTAWA — Canadian consumer prices picked up their pace last month as the annual inflation rate moved up from very low levels and closer to the Bank of Canada’s ideal target of two per cent, Statistics Canada said Friday.Higher gasoline prices helped push the annual inflation rate in September to 1.6 per cent, up from 1.4 per cent a month earlier and away from its two-year low of just one per cent in June, the agency said. Excluding gas prices, inflation was 1.1 per cent. The inflation-targeting central bank scrutinizes inflation ahead of its rate decisions. Its next benchmark rate announcement is scheduled for next Wednesday. However, only one of the bank’s three preferred measures of core inflation, which seek to look through the noise of more-volatile items, increased last month while the others stayed put.Statistics Canada also released numbers Friday that showed retail sales contracted 0.3 per cent in August, after increasing 0.4 per cent in July. Retail sales volumes in August recoiled 0.7 per cent.Excluding sales at gas stations and auto dealers, the report said retail trade was down 1.3 per cent in August. Sales were also down 2.5 per cent at food and beverage stores and 2.4 per cent at furniture and home furnishings stores. The retail sales data suggests the economy is starting to show signs of slowing down, as widely expected, following its red-hot performance in the first half of the year.On inflation, the report highlighted gasoline, travel tours and air transportation as the biggest upward contributors to consumer prices. The downward pressure was led by cheaper electricity, women’s clothing furniture. The report also found that consumer prices rose in seven of the 10 provinces in September. read more

Annan and UN envoy hail success of weekend elections for Kosovo Assembly

“The Secretary-General calls on all of Kosovo’s political leaders to respect the result of the election,” his spokesman said in a statement issued today in New York after the poll for the 120-member Assembly.”The turnout and good management of the electoral process, for the first time by Kosovans themselves, demonstrate their understanding of the importance of making their voices heard and taking a direct hand in shaping Kosovo’s future.”Mr. Annan said he expected a new government would be formed quickly and would cooperate closely with the UN Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK), which has been in charge of the province since June 1999.The statement stressed the importance of the incoming government working “for the benefit of all,” including Kosovo’s ethnic minorities. While noting the low turnout among Kosovo Serbs, Mr. Annan praised “those who voted and those who stood as candidates for their courage in the face of severe contrary pressure.”The Secretary-General’s Special Representative Søren Jessen-Petersen, who spent Saturday touring polling stations across the province, described the election as peaceful, well-organized and a success.Acknowledging that many Kosovo Serbs who would have liked to vote did not because they were afraid, he pointed out that there were those who did vote, including some in areas where not a single party had campaigned, and this meant that there would be Kosovo Serb representatives in the Assembly.”This is the important thing: there will be representatives who will be part of the dialogue, and we will now reach out not only to all voters in all communities who did vote, but also to those who wanted to vote but were afraid, because they also share a common interest in the future of Kosovo.” read more

Watership Down actors reveal they were inspired by the terror of watching

Clover, voiced by Gemma Arterton  Clover, voiced by Gemma Arterton  Star Wars actor Boyega, 26, said the realism created by the new animation techniques will increase the “emotional stakes” for viewers.“I was also curious as to how they were going to do this, because the 1978 film was in 2D and it was devastating,” said Boyega, who voices Bigwig.“I was devastated, I can’t lie. It was too much – it was bloody and looked a bit strange and as a kid taking that in was very scary.”Hoult, 29, who plays Fiver, said the story is “scary at times” but “not unsuitable for your children to be watching with you”.The cast spoke after one of the producers, Rory Aitken, said the remake is “clearly not appropriate for younger children”. Stars of the BBC’s new Watership Down adaptation have revealed their performances were shaped by the “terror” they felt as children watching the classic 1978 version.James McAvoy, John Boyega, Gemma Arterton and Nicholas Hoult recalled the traumatic scenes from the cartoon ahead of the new television mini-series which airs this Christmas. The TV remake of Richard Adams’ classic children’s novel, which has sold more than 50 million copies since its release in 1972, uses the latest animation technology to recreate many of the violent scenes which viewers found so affecting in the earlier version.Asked why he took the role, McAvoy, 39, who plays Hazel, said: “From the deep love and terror that watching the 1978 animation put inside my bones, and then from reading the novel later in life when it blew me away all over again.”Arterton, 32, who plays Clover, added: “I remember seeing the 1978 animation when I was very young – and being petrified by it. Having revisited the story as an adult, it’s so pertinent, especially for these days and these times.”The adaptation, which has an all-British cast, will air as two feature-length episodes on BBC One on December 22 and 23. Happy Pi Day Now go eat pie

first_imgDepending on how much you love or loathe math, today might be a day to celebrate or forget. It is March 14, or 3/14, and is better known in math circles as Pi Day.It was first thought up by the physicist Larry Shaw while working at the San Francisco Exploratorium in 1988. He wanted to celebrate the mathematical constant we all remember from school: 3.14159. But how do you get people to celebrate a number? Simple, you mark the day by offering up an excuse to eat delicious pie.If you’ve never heard of Pi Day before, you may be surprised to find how popular it is. Several universities celebrate the day, with MIT being a standout example as they mail out applicant decision letters today, but do so at 6:28pm. This is known as Tau Time, as tau is twice as large as pi and a major competitor to the crown pi holds in the world of math. It’s also fitting that today is Albert Einstein‘s birthday, so many double celebrations happen including pi reciting competitions. However, I prefer Larry Shaw’s original idea for how to celebrate the day: we all march around in a circle while eating lots of delicious pie. As well as offering up an opportunity to eat, any kids taking part are sure to learn what pi is and how to remember the first 6 digits of it with a rhyme:Cosine, secant, tangent, sine! 3.14159If your main reason for celebrating Pi Day is as an excuse to eat pie, you’ll also be glad to know there’s a second celebration on July 22. That’s Pi Approximation Day as the fraction 22/7 is a common approximation of pi.And there’s one final use to point out for pi outside of math. If you ever need to get the attention of a room full of scientists or mathematicians, The Simpsons‘ Professor Frank has this top tip to offer:Thanks to Wikipedia for background information.last_img read more

It Didnt Take Long for Humans and Neanderthals to Start Boinking

first_img Watch: Dolphin Leaps Feet Away From Unsuspecting SurferNASA Says 2 Asteroids Will Safely Fly By Earth This Weekend Stay on target The prevailing thought for decades was that humans descending from Neanderthals more or less directly. Some thought we may be close cousins, but that’s about as intimate as anyone thought we got for some time. The more we started digging though, the more (and weirder) mysteries we discover lying between us and some of our nearest kin, and a team of researchers has just made the most startling (and bizarre) discovery yet.The group sequenced DNA from the remains of a Neanderthal who lived some 100,000 years ago and compared it that of modern humans. They discovered that some ancient human woman part of the lineage that ultimately birthed homo sapiens mated with a Neanderthal male more than 120,000 years earlier. This is especially weird because that’s well before we thought that our ancestors came into contact with Neanderthals. All this comes from a special kind of genetic information only passed down through the mother — mitochondrial DNA. While the sperm and egg each carry half the chromosomes needed to make life a thing, every cell of any decently complex organism has another bit of DNA in their mitochondria — tiny pseudo-cells that serve as the power plants for their host. Because only eggs have mitochondria though, only the mother’s mtDNA gets passed down. This makes it particularly useful for evolutionary biology, because you can compare the development and changes of that genetic information, with that stored in the rest of the cell. For some time, researchers have been perplexed by the fact that Neanderthals and humans share a lot of the same genetic markers — especially in the mtDNA. This could explain it.“Her children spread her genetic legacy through the Neanderthal lineage,” reads Science Magazine. “In time her African mtDNA completely replaced the ancestral Neanderthal mtDNA.”This is a huge discovery, and shows that humans and our European-based cousins never really stopped intermingling. The two lines are thought to have diverged almost 500,000 years ago, and, over the millennia, we just couldn’t stay apart. I really can’t tell if this is cute or weird. On the one hand, it’s humans mating with not-quite-humans, but then we are (or were, at least) both intellectually capable species, presumably with the ability to make our own choices. And we clearly weren’t so genetically distant that we couldn’t have perfectly healthy and normal kids. But… this is still weird, right? No? Maybe? Damn. Evolution is just… weird.Let us know what you like about Geek by taking our survey.last_img read more

David de Gea no longer saves for Manchester United

first_imgNow that Manchester United has been defeated once again, we need to talk about the terrible form that Spanish goalkeeper David de Gea is going through. The match that Manchester United just finished playing against Tottenham Hotspur can be defined as a disaster, the Red Devils fell 3-0 at Old Trafford in what can be considered a historic result for Tottenham and the beginning of the end for many names inside the club. One of the most talked about players that haven’t really been delivering top quality performances is David de Gea, the Spanish goalkeeper who has gone through hell since the summer started and hasn’t really been able to recover from this unexpected situation. David de Gea used to be considered the best goalkeeper in the world just a few months ago, he was Manchester United’s most trusted life insurance and there was nothing the Red Devils couldn’t do against any rivals because they had the confidence of having a goalkeeper of his stature on their side. But something has gone very wrong somewhere down the line, De Gea is no longer the same player and the results of this dramatic level drop are starting to show a little too much.?? David De Gea’s last 16 shots faced for @ManUtd & @SeFutbol:? Saved ⚽️ Goal ⚽️ Goal ⚽️ Goal ⚽️ Goal ⚽️ Goal ⚽️ Goal ? Saved? Saved ? Saved ⚽️ Goal ⚽️ Goal ⚽️ Goal ⚽️ Goal⚽️ Goal⚽️ Goal?— SPORF (@Sporf) August 27, 2018Where it all began.David de Gea’s bad run started since the day in which Spain’s manager Julen Lopetegui was sacked from his position, that gave the Atletico Madrid product a huge responsibility because he would be the one that was going to suffer the most when a rival scored during the World Cup. De Gea’s first match was against Portugal and he got a hat-trick from Cristiano Ronaldo that was a major factor for his confidence drop as well, De Gea hasn’t really recovered since that moment. During the rest of the World Cup De Gea got a couple more goals from Morrocco, then he got another one against Russia and failed to deliver during the penalty kicks against the hosts. Spain got eventually eliminated from the tournament and David de Gea was one of the most criticized players of that competition because he was far from the level that turned him into the best goalkeeper in the world. All the Spaniard had to look forward to was Manchester United’s new season, but things have only gotten worse since he returned to action for his club.David de Gea for club & country since the start of the 2018 World Cup:• 16 shots on target faced• 12 goals concededDave needs to start saving again. ? Abraham, ChelseaChelsea hat-trick hero Tammy Abraham hopes for more Andrew Smyth – September 14, 2019 Tammy Abraham hopes this season will be his big breakthrough at Chelsea after firing his first hat-trick for the club in Saturday’s 5-2 win at Wolves.— Squawka Football (@Squawka) August 27, 2018Mourinho’s failing Manchester United. For David de Gea after returning from vacations this summer, the top priority has been to return to his former self and help out his squad winning matches. In three Premier League games after this Munday’s defeat against Tottenham Hotspur, David de Gea has received six goals already and they haven’t been his fault really but this goalkeeper used to save everything coming his way just a few months back and how his statistics have become a disaster. Just so you get an idea of what we are talking about let’s look at De Gea’s last 16 shots on target he’s received, the Spaniard has only been able to save four since the World Cup started back in June during activity between his club and country. This is an alarming stat that gives us an idea of how complicated life is right now for David, a goalkeeper who is going through a terrible moment of his career and will keep working to get past it.A disappointing night. #MUFC #MUNTOT— Manchester United (@ManUtd) August 27, 2018De Gea’s bad luck with his defenders. But it’s not just his fault that this is happening right now, there are other players who are to blame also for the goals that Manchester United receives and we consider it isn’t fair that David de Gea takes all the responsibility for these painful defeats. The Red Devils’ defensive back line is truly a disaster, they weren’t able to sign any new players on that position and they have practically been obligated to play with players of the likes of Chris Smalling or Phil Jones who are just not at the level the manager expects. In this Monday’s match against the Spurs, Jones was clearly the player to blame for Harry Kane’s goal and one of the biggest disappointments for United at Old Trafford. David de Gea could’ve done a lot more in Tottenham’s second goal that Lucas Moura scored, and there was nothing he could really do during the third and final goal that Tottenham Hotspur won at Old Trafford this Monday. I’m sorry to tell you this but, Dave no longer saves for Manchester United.Para quienes apoyasteis, criticasteis con respeto y sufristeis con nosotros, gracias. Estamos jodidos pero nos levantaremos y no dejaremos de intentarlo ??To whom supported, suffered and criticised us with respect, thanks. We’re fucked but we’ll get up again and never give up.— David de Gea (@D_DeGea) July 2, 2018What do you think David de Gea’s problem is, could it be a psychological problem or is he just going through a bad run? AG drops charge against Garvison

first_imgAt the request of the Skamania County Board of Commissioners, the state attorney general’s office has dropped a charge of official misconduct against former county auditor J. Michael Garvison. However, the charge is likely to be renewed early next year.Garvison was charged with the crime, a gross misdemeanor, for allegedly running up tens of thousands of dollars of unauthorized expenditures for travel, college tuition and office equipment during his tenure as Skamania County’s elected auditor. “The new prosecuting attorney-elect, Adam Kick, will be taking over the case after he takes office,” Commissioner Paul Pearce said last week. The three commissioners, unhappy with the plea bargain negotiated between Garvison’s attorney and the attorney general’s office, voted unanimously Nov. 2 to ask the state to return the case to the county. They noted that a new county prosecuting attorney will be free of the conflict of interest that prompted the current prosecuting attorney, Peter Banks, to refer the case to the state attorney general’s office. Banks, who was defeated for re-election in the August primary, routinely provided legal advice to the auditor’s office during Garvison’s tenure.“We do not have any additional role in the Garvison case,” Assistant Attorney General Scott Marlow told The Columbian last week. “The attorney general’s office in Washington state has very limited criminal jurisdiction. We have to be invited in by the local prosecutor. In this case, that invitation was rescinded by the local prosecutor in Skamania County. So we are done with the case, we’ve turned our files over to Skamania County, and we wish them the best of luck in pursuing the matter.”last_img read more

Two chinook now allowed in ocean salmon fishery

first_imgILWACO — Anglers may keep two chinook now as part of their two-salmon bag limit when fishing in the ocean off northern Oregon and southern Washington.Federal officials increased the daily effective Sunday between Cape Falcon in Oregon and Leadbetter Point in Washington.“When the regulations were set this spring, anglers were limited to only one chinook per day,” said Eric Schindler, ocean salmon project leader for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. “This was to ensure enough chinook were available for the full season. Catch and effort estimates through July 31 indicated that the one-chinook bag limit restriction can be lifted with little risk of having to close early.”Through July 31, only 15 percent of the chinook guideline and 20 percent of the coho quota had been taken.Salmon fishing off the Columbia River mouth opened June 26 and continues until Sept. 30 or 33,600 fin-clipped coho are caught. The bag limit at Buoy 10, the lower 16 miles of the Columbia River downstream of Tongue Point, is two adult salmon, but only one chinook, through Aug. 28.Chinook retention at Buoy 10 is prohibited beginning Aug. 29.Washington sampled 86 anglers with no salmon at Buoy 10 between Aug. 1 and 4.last_img read more

1k Google employees frustrated with continued betrayal protest against Censored Search engine

first_imgAbout a thousand Google employees frustrated with a series of controversies involving Google have signed a letter to demand transparency on building a censored search engine for China. The project named Dragonfly is a censored search engine for the Chinese market. In the letter employees mentioned, “Currently we do not have the information required to make ethically-informed decisions about our work, our projects, and our employment.” The letter published by the Buzzfeed news was circulated on Google’s internal communications system and is signed by about 1400 Googlers. The Dragonfly project will be Google’s return to China after 8 years of withdrawal from its decision to protest against censorship and government hacking. China has the world’s largest internet audience but has frustrated American tech giants with content restrictions or outright blockages of services including Facebook and Instagram. Crisis already hailing in Google This is not the first time Google’s outspoken workforce has been agitated by changes in strategy. In April, the internet company’s employees spoke out against its involvement in a Pentagon program that uses artificial intelligence to improve weaponry. Over 4,000 employees signed a petition asking the company to cancel it. A dozen engineers resigned in protest, and Google eventually promised not to renew the contract. Following that uproar, Google published AI ethics guidelines for the company. The letter about Dragonfly that’s currently being circulated inside the company, argues that those guidelines are not enough and employees further added, “As a company and as individuals we have a responsibility to use this power to better the world, not to support social control, violence, and oppression,” the letter reads. “What is clear is that Ethical Principles on paper are not enough to ensure ethical decision making. We need transparency, oversight, and accountability mechanisms sufficient to allow informed ethical choice and deliberation across the company.” What does Google’s management say Allison Day, a program manager at Google is not shocked by this outrage and says to the Buzzfeed news, “I can see the bottom line for any corporation is growth, and [China] represented a gigantic market,” she said. “The ‘Don’t be Evil’ slogan or whatever is, you know… It’s not a farce. I wouldn’t go so far as to say that. But it is a giant corporation, and its bottom line is to make money.” Google CEO Sundar Pichai has repeatedly expressed interest in the company making a return to China, which it pulled out of for political reasons in 2010. Pichai’s apparent decision to return, which was not addressed companywide before Thursday, has caused some employees to consider leaving the company altogether. “There are questions about how [Dragonfly] is implemented that could make it less concerning, or much more concerning,” an anonymous Google employee said. “That will continue to be on my mind, and the mind of other Googlers deciding whether to stay.” The Dragonfly project secrecy Two Google employees who were working on Dragonfly were so disturbed by the secrecy that they quit the team over it. Developers who were working on the project had been asked to keep Dragonfly confidential — not just from the public, but also from their coworkers. Even more upsetting to some employees is the fact that the company has blocked off internal access to Dragonfly’s code. Managers also shut down access to certain documents pertaining to the project, according to the Intercept. Employees feel that this is a special kind of betrayal and erosion of trust because they talk and act like, “Once you’re at Google, you can look up the code anywhere in the code base and see for yourself.” “We pride ourselves on having an open and transparent culture,” said the anonymous Google developer. “There [are] definitely employees at the company who are very frustrated because that’s clearly not true.” Google has not responded to specific questions about Dragonfly from the Intercept, nor to Bloomberg, nor to BuzzFeed News, only saying in a statement, “We don’t comment on speculation about future plans.” An anonymous Google developer said, “Even though a lot of us have really good jobs, we can see that the difference between us and the leadership is still astronomical. The vision they have for the future is not our vision.” Read Next: Google releases new political ads library as part of its transparency report Google is missing out $50 million because of Fortnite’s decision to bypass Play Store Google’s censored Chinese search engine is a stupid, stupid move, says former exec Lokman Tsuilast_img read more

first_imgMumbai, India – Reported by Elite Traveler, the Private Jet Lifestyle MagazineTaj Hotels, Resorts and Palaces has added another authentic Indian palace to its luxury hospitality portfolio. Newly resplendent after 10 years of sensitive renovation, Taj Falaknuma Palace or “Mirror of the Sky” will open its ornate doors November 1 in Hyderabad, offering guests a glimpse of the regal lifestyle of the Nizams who governed the legendry city that gave birth to the Hope and Koh-i-noor diamonds.Once the royal residence of Nizam Mehboob Ali Khan and passed from generation to generation of Nizams like a precious jewel, Taj has infused new life into this celebrated home under the guidance of Princess Ezra, wife of the eighth Nizam. Falaknuma Palace is ready to resume its status as Hyderabad’s most exclusive address in keeping with its storied heritage of hosting visiting royalty, such as King Edward VIII and Russia’s Tsar Nicholas II.“Look around the world. One rarely finds a city such as Hyderabad that so effortlessly fuses the old with the new, and tradition with modernity. The legendary rulers of this city embellished it with architectural marvels, of which Falaknuma Palace is an original and magnificent landmark,” said Raymond N. Bickson, Managing Director & CEO of Taj Hotels. “We are proud to have added another splendid historic palace to our grand portfolio. We’re especially delighted that we were able to painstakingly restore every aspect of the Palace, retaining its architectural and historical magnificence while also creating a state-of-the-art luxury hotel.”Taj Falaknuma Palace is an architectural gem set amidst 32 acres of cascading gardens with outdoor terraces and pool. Built entirely of Italian marble in the shape of a scorpion, this fabled guest house set on a hill overlooking the city was the private preserve of the city’s wealthy Nizam rulers, who filled its ornate Baroque-inspired spaces with museum-quality furnishings and art worthy of their elite guests.“For 10 years, we have worked on preserving the priceless art and artifacts. We are very proud today to welcome our guests to the Taj Falaknuma Palace – restored, renewed and reinstated to its former glory. Guests can experience enchanting moments of luxury while reliving chapters from the lives of the Nizams,” said Ranjit Phillipose, General Manager, Taj Falaknuma Palace.Private and public spaces once again showcase ornate inlaid furniture, the finest collection of Jade, the rich handcrafted tapestries and brocades from France, and intricate frescos with English as well as Indian influences. A walk through the palace at sunset with the Palace Historian brings the past vividly to life, with a chance to ask questions about specific events, artworks and furnishings, including the Imperial Library, a teak-and rose-wood room lined with bookcases that is a replica of the library at Windsor Castle and is filled with rare books and manuscripts.Guests may select from 60 exquisite rooms and suites, including a Grand Presidential Suite, which were once the private chambers of the Nizam, royal family and state guests, and include the services of a personal butler. The Palace offers two restaurants that reflect its European and Indian design influences: Celeste, serving Italian and Mediterranean cuisine, and Ada, featuring fine Indian dining, including a series of dishes taken from past palace banquet menus prepared in the Hyderabadi tradition of slow-cooking. Guests may also enjoy breakfast on the Jade Verandah or take Afternoon Tea in the exquisite Jade Room beneath Victorian-style hand-painted ceilings and Venetian chandeliers. Poolside relaxation includes inventive food and drink in The Rotunda, or guests may adjourn to the unique Hookah Lounge that recreates the romantic ambience of princely India, or opt for a sporting game in the Billiards Room with the Nizam’s personal bespoke billiards table and adjoining room for cards and chess. The signature Royal Jiva Spa offers holistic spa treatments with a philosophy rooted in traditional Indian approaches to wellness and includes a menu of spa cuisine based on Ayurvedic cooking principles.www.tajhotels.comlast_img read more

Additional training for band members will soon be scheduledNon-intrusive methodsDuring his 30-plus years of working in archaeology Jones has watched the growth of non-intrusive technologies in assessing historic sitesDave Maki of Archaeo-Physics LLC in Minneapolis said the technologies have caught on for a reason"It’s non-intrusive as opposed to traditional archaeology approaches" Maki said of methods such as electrical resistivity and ground penetrating radar "We can learn something about the archeology without disturbing it and learn something about the cultural significance"Electrical resistivity is often used when mapping sites of archaeological significance Maki and Andrew Wise a Duluth resident Maki often hires were two of those figures in neon safety vests who have spent weeks toeing at least 2000 square meters of the historic burial ground’s surfaceEvery 25 centimeters Maki and Wise moved the electrical resistivity meter and poked its two metal stakes about a centimeter into the soil The stakes on the end of the instrument injected an electrical current into the ground to measure the resistivity of the material or how difficult it is for electricity to move through an area in the groundAn area of higher resistivity will show up darker on a map charting the data Maki said while less-resistant material will show up lighterMaki compares his data to how the known location of a remain appears when it’s surveyed and from that he can get a good idea of what is beneath the surfaceMaki said he almost always uses a second form of technology to verify the results of the first At Mission Creek his team used ground-penetrating radar or GPRGPR transmits a high-frequency radio signal into the ground while recording the time it takes for a reflected signal to return This indicates a target’s depth and location in the groundOn a morning in July one crew member slowly wheeled a box containing the radar antenna along the ground while another crew member watched as the data came in on the attached computer screen a few feet awayOn that particular morning Maki had help from two crew members as they surveyed a 50-meter stretch of road surface Maki likes to "oversample" to improve the data he said Every two centimeters the GPR equipment transmits a pulse into the ground but each transmission averages eight readings per pulse He calls it data-stackingMaki has had three men from the Leech Lake Reservation working with him all of whom have experience with burial recovery and archaeological work he said — experience they can use to help mentor othersThe archaeological processUnder Minnesota’s Field Archaeology Act state-owned land is subject to an archaeological survey before construction in order to preserve and protect archaeological matter"That’s another statute that was kind of missed on this project because it should have had an extensive archaeological review and even a records review" Jones saidArchaeologists refer to this first review as a Phase One survey because it provides a historical overview and answers whether the ground holds archaeological material before a project begins Projects that use federal money or are on state land require a Phase One surveySigrid Arnott of Sigrid Arnott Consulting the Minneapolis-based archaeological firm MnDOT hired this summer specializes in such surveys and is now serving on-site as the principal investigator Although she does not do the geophysical work Arnott often works with geophysicists including Archaeo-Physics because the science can inform archaeologists where historical objects are locatedShe describes her role as the facilitator of all the project’s moving parts"It’s like building a forensics case" Arnott said "It’s not like you get one source of information that solves it all You have so many parts to the puzzle but every time we use a method it gives us a little more information"Project officials do not yet know when the project nor the Phase One survey will reach completion but archaeologists and trained band members will recover the remains for the band to then rebury properlyFor Arnott this project differs from her other archaeological work Instead of pursuing a research question she said the crew is guiding its decisions based on the band’s long-term needs"It’s probably going to help in the future on other sites" Arnott said "We’re developing new scientific methods and I think everyone is excited about that It could have a positive effect in the future or an outcome that would help other people"Ojibwe occupiedFond du Lac Band member Matthew Northrup said he was 10 when his father showed him the burial grounds at Mission Creek for the first time Northrup is the son of the late Jim Northrup who was a renowned author and Ojibwe traditionalist He showed a young Matthew the location of his ancestorsNow whenever Matthew Northrup drives past the site on Highway 23 he rolls down his window and performs the sacred ritual of burning tobacco"I’ve known forever that there are graves here" he said while visiting the site "I just didn’t know this project was happening"A couple blocks east of the burial site on Highway 23 sits a historical marker that notes "this was the site of a major Chippewa Indian settlement from the sixteenth through the nineteenth centuries"To the northwest on the other side of Jay Cooke State Park sits the Fond du Lac Reservation created by the Treaty of 1854 that ceded much of the Ojibwe-occupied Arrowhead region to the federal government for mining useThe area now known as the Fond du Lac neighborhood in Duluth along the St Louis River has served as Ojibwe gathering grounds since the 1600s but Native Americans started occupying the area thousands of years before"A lot of people think
