Manchester United get their Angel, sign Di Maria for $99 million

first_imgAngel Di Maria has joined Man United for a British-record fee of 59.7 million poundsManchester United broke the British transfer-fee record by signing Angel Di Maria from Real Madrid for 59.7 million pounds ($99 million) on Tuesday, extending a summer spending spree that was sparked by its most disappointing season in a generation. The 26-year-old Di Maria joined on a five-year contract, taking United’s spending to about 130 million pounds ($215 million) in the summer transfer window as England’s most successful club seeks to revive its fortunes under new manager Louis van Gaal.Di Maria was one of Madrid’s key players last season when the Spanish team became European champion for a 10th time, but rejected the offer of a new contract during the offseason and asked to leave.”I have thoroughly enjoyed my time in Spain and there were a lot of clubs interested in me, but United is the only club that I would have left Real Madrid for,” Di Maria said. “Louis van Gaal is a fantastic coach with a proven track record of success and I am impressed by the vision and determination everyone has to get this club back to the top – where it belongs. I now just cannot wait to get started.”Di Maria’s transfer fee breaks the previous British record of 50 million pounds (then $81 million), set in 2011 when Fernando Torres joined Chelsea from Liverpool. Four players – Gareth Bale, Cristiano Ronaldo, Luis Suarez and James Rodriguez – have cost more than Di Maria in world football, while Zinedine Zidane moved from Juventus to Madrid for a similar fee in euro terms in 2001.advertisementThe 26-year-old former Real Madrid star has joined Man Utd on a five-year contract”Angel is a world-class midfielder but most importantly he is a team player,” Van Gaal said. “There is no doubting his immense natural talent. He is a tremendously fast and incisive left-footed player who puts fear into the most accomplished defense.”His dribbling skills and his ability to take on and beat opponents are a joy to watch. He is an excellent addition to the team.”The left-footed Di Maria, who can play anywhere across the midfield, will provide United with an injection of pace and technical ability in that area. Both attributes were lacking last season under David Moyes, when the team slumped to a seventh-place finish in the Premier League, and in the first two games of this season under Van Gaal.It is also a statement by United that the club can attract one of the world’s most talented players despite not being in the Champions League this season. United isn’t even playing in the Europa League.Critics say Van Gaal hasn’t addressed the team’s biggest weakness – a defense that lost three pillars in Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra this summer and has looked vulnerable in a 2-1 home loss to Swansea and a 1-1 draw at Sunderland in the two games so far in the Dutchman’s reign. But it is the kind of marquee signing United fans have been craving. The prospect of Di Maria linking up with attacking trio Robin van Persie, Wayne Rooney and Juan Mata is an enticing one as the team bids to return to the league’s top four and get back in the Champions League.Di Maria was man of the match in last season’s Champions League final against Atletico Madrid and one of Argentina’s best players at the World Cup in Brazil until he hurt his thigh in the quarterfinal win over Belgium, forcing him to miss the semifinal and final. He joined Real Madrid from Benfica in 2010, when he was an out-and-out winger. At Madrid last season, coach Carlo Ancelotti also played him as a central midfielder. Under contract until 2018 at Madrid, Di Maria faced increased competition in midfield following the signings of Rodriguez and Toni Kroos, and had been linked with a move to Paris Saint-Germain.Left back Luke Shaw, central midfielder Ander Herrera and defender Marcos Rojo are the other players to have moved to Old Trafford this summer in deals worth around 70 million pounds.last_img read more

Hima Das nearing her best, says High Performance Director Volker Herrmann

first_imgIndian athletics’ High Performance Director Volker Herrmann feels star sprinter Hima Das is nearing her best, having won five successive gold medals in three weeks in Europe. The 19-year-old Hima has won five races — four in 200m and one in her pet 400m event — in Poland and Czech Republic since July 2. She has been improving on her timing even though the field in all the five races was mediocre.”Hima is progressing in the right direction. If you want to run sub 50 seconds (in 400m) you also have to be able to run sub 22.80 in 200m. She is getting closer,” Hermann said, explaining why she began with 200m races before switching to 400m in her last race on July 20 when she clocked a season best time of 52.09.Hima is yet to qualify in either 200m or 400m for the World Championships, to be held in Doha from September 26 to October 6. The World Championships qualifying mark stands at 23.02 and 51.80.Her male counterpart Muhammed Anas has qualified for the World Championships after bettering his own 400m national record last week.”We also have Muhammed Anas breaking his own record and that is quite promising,” said the 38-year-old Hermann who took charge on July 1.The highly qualified German, who has worked in similar capacity in his native country and Singapore, said athletes around the world have been making changes in their training due to the World Championships happening late in the season, and the Indians are also adjusting accordingly.”All around the world, the athletes are facing the same problem. The coaches have to rush the whole preparation model. The athletes will need to peak twice, the first (peak) right now and second by the end of September.advertisement”We are preparing a series of competition to raise our performance level and then we will continue on a slightly higher level with higher intensity towards World Championships,” he added. He said 25 to 30 Indian athletes can qualify for next year’s Tokyo Olympics.”In men’s and women’s 400m relay, the eight finalists at World Championships will directly qualify for Tokyo and in certain ways, that is the easiest for us to qualify. Mixed 400m relay is another one we can qualify. Then, we are in a good situation in javelin throw and 400m.”Tokyo is exactly one year from now. We will work on the strengths and weaknesses of our athletes to do our best. But we need to look forward to 2024 and 2028 Olympics.”Hermann said his plan is to make three different strategies for the three upcoming Olympics.”First for Tokyo, we will work with the current athletes in high performance team. Secondly for 2024, besides the current athletes we have to find talented ones at youth and junior levels who have potential to be at top level in five years from now. They can be 15, 16 and 17 years of age,” he said.”For 2028 Olympics, we have to work with 10, 11 or 12 years old children. To be honest, these are athletes with which we can initiate change in Indian athletics. We need to work at state and district level, give proper foundation to these kids, more towards core training and technical model.”India should develop its own philosophy and not copy from say USA or another country to face specific challenges it has. The working of officials should be streamlined and coaching methods should be same throughout the country.”He said that training of high performance athletes should focus more on increasing intensive quality sessions rather than on volume, and provide enough recovery time.”The modern method of training is to increase number of intensive sessions and achieve high quality. You cannot have high volume and high intensity. But you have to have enough recovery time. Otherwise, you will have injury and mental fatigue.”The ideal training is to ensure 100 per cent in few events like World Championships or Olympics. It is important to give one time 90m throw (in javelin) instead of five time 85m.”Unlike other sports, it is not enough to give 96 or 97 per cent in a top event, you have to be 100 per cent. The three or four per cent make all the difference.”On India’s high performance pool of athletes, Hermann said, “130 or 140 elite athletes in national camps currently is too small a percentage of total population. In USA, there were 200 thousand athletes competing in NCAA.”But I am optimistic of Indian athletics making strides in coming years. The government and the AFI are working hard and other stakeholders are also interested in taking athletics forward. We need involvement of state and district officials in a big way for grassroot development. We need step-by-step approach to take Indian athletics to next level.advertisementAlso see:last_img read more

Bye Week Comes At Perfect Time For Pokes

first_imgJordan Sterns didn’t play last Saturday for the first time in what felt like forever. You know if Jordan Sterns is sitting out games that it’s time for a week off. And thankfully OSU will get it this week. It has been over two months since OSU hasn’t played a game or been in the throes of fall camp, but finally they will get some rest before playing Kansas next weekend.“We feel good and it is much needed rest,” said Mason Rudolph on Saturday. “It’s been a long haul these past few games and had some guys getting beat up. It’ll be good to relax, get our bodies back and prepare for Kansas. I am very proud of this team and how we’ve battled back and fought through it. It couldn’t have come at a better time.”“We need it,” added defensive lineman Vili Leveni. “We’ve been going hard since fall camp so this week is going to be well needed for us to rest our bodies and prepare for Kansas.”The list of those who are injured or at the very least nicked up includes Sterns, Jordan Burton, Jarrell Owens, Jordan Brailford, Chris Carson, Marcell Ateman, James Washington, Devante Averette, Larry Williams, Ramon Richards and Brad Lundblade (according to the Oklahoman). Ateman and Brailford haven’t played all year. Carson has missed a month. Williams is out indefinitely.OSU has often had by week situated poorly. Last year’s bye came after the West Virginia game at roughly the same part of the season. This is huge (yuuuuge) for a team like OSU that runs a ton of plays (No. 12 in offensive plays run, No. 24 in defensive plays faced).“We need a week off,” said Gundy on Saturday. “This was a tough week for us. We had several guys that didn’t play and we had several guys that played that didn’t practice this week. We need the time. We’ve got some guys that are beat up, so we’ll let them rest and get back to work next week to get ready for Kansas.“We’re not going to even have a real practice this week,” Gundy added to the Oklahoman. “I’ll have them out there in a helmet or something maybe one day, maybe two days, but that’s it. We’re not going to put pads on. We need to get them back.”They will in time for a stretch run that includes monster games against WVU, at Kansas State and at TCU before Bedlam in December. If you’re looking for the comments section, it has moved to our forum, The Chamber. Lewis Hamilton blocks out F1 party to focus on Chinese GP success

first_img“I am not one for birthdays, I’m not one for anniversaries, I’m not one for particularly special days like this, so it is absolutely no different to any other race weekend for me,” he said. “I am here to do one job and one job only and that is to win. It doesn’t matter if it is the 1,000th, the 2,000th or the 10,000th, it is an irrelevant figure for me.”It is not an entirely unsurprising response from the 34-year-old who has always been strong in his ability to blank out distractions, if not perhaps the one Formula One might have been hoping for from their most saleable asset. However, Hamilton knows that this season the threat from Ferrari is real. The Scuderia, so strong in testing, were off the pace at the opening grand prix in Australia, where Hamilton was second to teammate Valtteri Bottas. But at the second race in Bahrain, Ferrari definitively found their pace. Hamilton knows he only inherited his win there after an injection system fault scuppered Charles Leclerc’s dominant lead for Ferrari.“They obviously have a great package,” Hamilton said. “You could say a stronger package than last year. They have definitively stepped up.”At Ferrari the question is not only can they replicate the Bahrain performance in China but whether Leclerc will again comprehensively outshine Vettel, who struggled in the last race, finishing fifth. The team have said they would favour Vettel under certain circumstances but Leclerc clearly has no intention of being sidelined. He ignored orders to pass his teammate in Bahrain. Motor sport Read more Share on Messenger Vettel said he is enjoying his relationship with the 21 year old, still in only his second season in F1. “Charles is fast, he has proven many times before F1 why he has deserved the place,” he said. “To work with he is very straightforward. I haven’t come across a driver that is a pain in the arse and I hope I never will.“I have always shown respect when other people did well and he did in Bahrain. I was not happy with my performance, that’s why I know I can do better and we have lots of races to prove that but at least when I am not at the top, it’s good that he is.”Leclerc took pole in Bahrain and the win was in his grasp until he was relegated to third but his first podium still put him only one point behind Vettel. His confidence is high and if Ferrari find the sweet spot again in Shanghai he will have every chance for a debut win.Like Hamilton he was not allowing any distractions. “Things go very quickly in F1,” he said. “After the first race nobody sees me as a title contender, after the second race everyone sees me as a title contender. I need to keep the focus on what I am doing in the car, work as hard as possible, try to do the best job in and out of the car and the rest will come. Then we will see. We are only at the third race.” Before F1’s 1000th grand prix: the greatest races of all time Mercedes GP Since you’re here… Share on Pinterest Read more Ferrari Topics Share on Twitter Lewis Hamilton is in no mood for any distractions from the defence of his title, even as Formula One prepares to celebrate the 1,000th world championship race at the Chinese Grand Prix on Sunday. The five-times world champion has competed in almost a quarter of F1’s 999 races. CBI arrests PC after high drama

first_imgNew Delhi: Former Finance Minister and senior Congress leader, P Chidambaram was on Wednesday night arrested by the CBI amidst the high drama, where officials had to scale the walls of his Jor Bagh home to enter the premises and take him into custody.Investigative agencies sprung into action after the Supreme Court of India closed for business on Wednesday. Earlier in the day, the Apex court had denied an urgent hearing to Chidambaram’s Special Leave Petition (SLP), seeking protection from arrest in the INX Media case. Also Read – India gets first tranche of Swiss bank a/c detailsOfficials here said that Chidambaram was arrested based on an arrest warrant issued by a competent court. Sources here said that a Rouse Avenue court here had issued the arrest warrant for the former Finance Minister, in the INX case. While, the court referred the matter to the CJI, which lawyers say will now be heard on Friday, Chidambaram was seen in public for the first after the Delhi High Court denied him bail in the case. The veteran Congress leader arrived at the AICC headquarters here, where he delivered a short statement and left. Also Read – Tourists to be allowed in J&K from ThursdayHe emphasised that he was not evading the law and that he was trying to get the law’s help in this matter. He added he that had not been named in the FIR or its contents and that the CBI was yet to file a charge sheet in the case against him. A CBI team missed Chidambaram by minutes at the AICC headquarters. However, when he reached his Jor Bagh residence, CBI and ED teams were not being allowed to enter. The drama escalated to a point where officials from both agencies had to scale the wall to enter the premises. At least three teams from CBI and one from ED were at the residence assisted by at least 20 Delhi Police officials. The Enforcement Directorate had issued a Look Out Circular (LOC) against Chidambaram on Tuesday, and so did the CBI. As soon as the Apex court opened on Wednesday, Chidambaram’s lawyers approached the senior-most judge as directed and tried to ask for an urgent hearing to get their client protection from arrest and a stay on the Delhi High Court order that denied him anticipatory bail in the case. However, given the “magnitude” of the case, the court forwarded the matter to the CJI. As Chidambaram’s lawyers went into a huddle trying to get the matter formally listed in the docket, the SC registry cited some “defects” with Chidambaram’s SLP, saying the error might come in the way of listing the matter. In the SLP, Chidambaram’s lawyers asked whether he can be denied bail even when he is not named in the FIR or its contents, and when he has fully co-operated with investigators. The petition asks whether the High Court was right in considering only the case diary and select questions where Chidambaram allegedly gave evasive answers while denying him bail.Chidambaram’s petition also notes that all other arrested accused in the case have already been granted bail. Lawyers later in the day said that the Apex court would not hear the matter until Friday morning, thus allowing agencies time till then to arrest Chidambaram. However, the sitting Congress Rajya Sabha MP had not been seen since he left court premises on Tuesday. Chidambaram did not return to his Jorbagh residence, where a six-member CBI team visited just hours after the Delhi High Court lifted his arrest shield. The CBI team arrived at the residence once again after 11:15 pm to paste a notice outside the house, ordered the former Finance Minister to join the investigation within two hours of receiving it and also sent it to his email address. Sources here said that Chidambaram has not joined the investigation and that no fresh summons has been issued to him as of yet.last_img read more

Canadas inflation is up but retail sales are down

OTTAWA — Canadian consumer prices picked up their pace last month as the annual inflation rate moved up from very low levels and closer to the Bank of Canada’s ideal target of two per cent, Statistics Canada said Friday.Higher gasoline prices helped push the annual inflation rate in September to 1.6 per cent, up from 1.4 per cent a month earlier and away from its two-year low of just one per cent in June, the agency said. Excluding gas prices, inflation was 1.1 per cent. The inflation-targeting central bank scrutinizes inflation ahead of its rate decisions. Its next benchmark rate announcement is scheduled for next Wednesday. However, only one of the bank’s three preferred measures of core inflation, which seek to look through the noise of more-volatile items, increased last month while the others stayed put.Statistics Canada also released numbers Friday that showed retail sales contracted 0.3 per cent in August, after increasing 0.4 per cent in July. Retail sales volumes in August recoiled 0.7 per cent.Excluding sales at gas stations and auto dealers, the report said retail trade was down 1.3 per cent in August. Sales were also down 2.5 per cent at food and beverage stores and 2.4 per cent at furniture and home furnishings stores. The retail sales data suggests the economy is starting to show signs of slowing down, as widely expected, following its red-hot performance in the first half of the year.On inflation, the report highlighted gasoline, travel tours and air transportation as the biggest upward contributors to consumer prices. The downward pressure was led by cheaper electricity, women’s clothing furniture. The report also found that consumer prices rose in seven of the 10 provinces in September. read more

Annan and UN envoy hail success of weekend elections for Kosovo Assembly

“The Secretary-General calls on all of Kosovo’s political leaders to respect the result of the election,” his spokesman said in a statement issued today in New York after the poll for the 120-member Assembly.”The turnout and good management of the electoral process, for the first time by Kosovans themselves, demonstrate their understanding of the importance of making their voices heard and taking a direct hand in shaping Kosovo’s future.”Mr. Annan said he expected a new government would be formed quickly and would cooperate closely with the UN Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK), which has been in charge of the province since June 1999.The statement stressed the importance of the incoming government working “for the benefit of all,” including Kosovo’s ethnic minorities. While noting the low turnout among Kosovo Serbs, Mr. Annan praised “those who voted and those who stood as candidates for their courage in the face of severe contrary pressure.”The Secretary-General’s Special Representative Søren Jessen-Petersen, who spent Saturday touring polling stations across the province, described the election as peaceful, well-organized and a success.Acknowledging that many Kosovo Serbs who would have liked to vote did not because they were afraid, he pointed out that there were those who did vote, including some in areas where not a single party had campaigned, and this meant that there would be Kosovo Serb representatives in the Assembly.”This is the important thing: there will be representatives who will be part of the dialogue, and we will now reach out not only to all voters in all communities who did vote, but also to those who wanted to vote but were afraid, because they also share a common interest in the future of Kosovo.” read more

Watership Down actors reveal they were inspired by the terror of watching

Clover, voiced by Gemma Arterton  Clover, voiced by Gemma Arterton  Star Wars actor Boyega, 26, said the realism created by the new animation techniques will increase the “emotional stakes” for viewers.“I was also curious as to how they were going to do this, because the 1978 film was in 2D and it was devastating,” said Boyega, who voices Bigwig.“I was devastated, I can’t lie. It was too much – it was bloody and looked a bit strange and as a kid taking that in was very scary.”Hoult, 29, who plays Fiver, said the story is “scary at times” but “not unsuitable for your children to be watching with you”.The cast spoke after one of the producers, Rory Aitken, said the remake is “clearly not appropriate for younger children”. Stars of the BBC’s new Watership Down adaptation have revealed their performances were shaped by the “terror” they felt as children watching the classic 1978 version.James McAvoy, John Boyega, Gemma Arterton and Nicholas Hoult recalled the traumatic scenes from the cartoon ahead of the new television mini-series which airs this Christmas. The TV remake of Richard Adams’ classic children’s novel, which has sold more than 50 million copies since its release in 1972, uses the latest animation technology to recreate many of the violent scenes which viewers found so affecting in the earlier version.Asked why he took the role, McAvoy, 39, who plays Hazel, said: “From the deep love and terror that watching the 1978 animation put inside my bones, and then from reading the novel later in life when it blew me away all over again.”Arterton, 32, who plays Clover, added: “I remember seeing the 1978 animation when I was very young – and being petrified by it. Having revisited the story as an adult, it’s so pertinent, especially for these days and these times.”The adaptation, which has an all-British cast, will air as two feature-length episodes on BBC One on December 22 and 23. Happy Pi Day Now go eat pie

first_imgDepending on how much you love or loathe math, today might be a day to celebrate or forget. It is March 14, or 3/14, and is better known in math circles as Pi Day.It was first thought up by the physicist Larry Shaw while working at the San Francisco Exploratorium in 1988. He wanted to celebrate the mathematical constant we all remember from school: 3.14159. But how do you get people to celebrate a number? Simple, you mark the day by offering up an excuse to eat delicious pie.If you’ve never heard of Pi Day before, you may be surprised to find how popular it is. Several universities celebrate the day, with MIT being a standout example as they mail out applicant decision letters today, but do so at 6:28pm. This is known as Tau Time, as tau is twice as large as pi and a major competitor to the crown pi holds in the world of math. It’s also fitting that today is Albert Einstein‘s birthday, so many double celebrations happen including pi reciting competitions. However, I prefer Larry Shaw’s original idea for how to celebrate the day: we all march around in a circle while eating lots of delicious pie. As well as offering up an opportunity to eat, any kids taking part are sure to learn what pi is and how to remember the first 6 digits of it with a rhyme:Cosine, secant, tangent, sine! 3.14159If your main reason for celebrating Pi Day is as an excuse to eat pie, you’ll also be glad to know there’s a second celebration on July 22. That’s Pi Approximation Day as the fraction 22/7 is a common approximation of pi.And there’s one final use to point out for pi outside of math. If you ever need to get the attention of a room full of scientists or mathematicians, The Simpsons‘ Professor Frank has this top tip to offer:Thanks to Wikipedia for background information.last_img read more

It Didnt Take Long for Humans and Neanderthals to Start Boinking

first_img Watch: Dolphin Leaps Feet Away From Unsuspecting SurferNASA Says 2 Asteroids Will Safely Fly By Earth This Weekend Stay on target The prevailing thought for decades was that humans descending from Neanderthals more or less directly. Some thought we may be close cousins, but that’s about as intimate as anyone thought we got for some time. The more we started digging though, the more (and weirder) mysteries we discover lying between us and some of our nearest kin, and a team of researchers has just made the most startling (and bizarre) discovery yet.The group sequenced DNA from the remains of a Neanderthal who lived some 100,000 years ago and compared it that of modern humans. They discovered that some ancient human woman part of the lineage that ultimately birthed homo sapiens mated with a Neanderthal male more than 120,000 years earlier. This is especially weird because that’s well before we thought that our ancestors came into contact with Neanderthals. All this comes from a special kind of genetic information only passed down through the mother — mitochondrial DNA. While the sperm and egg each carry half the chromosomes needed to make life a thing, every cell of any decently complex organism has another bit of DNA in their mitochondria — tiny pseudo-cells that serve as the power plants for their host. Because only eggs have mitochondria though, only the mother’s mtDNA gets passed down. This makes it particularly useful for evolutionary biology, because you can compare the development and changes of that genetic information, with that stored in the rest of the cell. For some time, researchers have been perplexed by the fact that Neanderthals and humans share a lot of the same genetic markers — especially in the mtDNA. This could explain it.“Her children spread her genetic legacy through the Neanderthal lineage,” reads Science Magazine. “In time her African mtDNA completely replaced the ancestral Neanderthal mtDNA.”This is a huge discovery, and shows that humans and our European-based cousins never really stopped intermingling. The two lines are thought to have diverged almost 500,000 years ago, and, over the millennia, we just couldn’t stay apart. I really can’t tell if this is cute or weird. On the one hand, it’s humans mating with not-quite-humans, but then we are (or were, at least) both intellectually capable species, presumably with the ability to make our own choices. And we clearly weren’t so genetically distant that we couldn’t have perfectly healthy and normal kids. But… this is still weird, right? No? Maybe? Damn. Evolution is just… weird.Let us know what you like about Geek by taking our survey.last_img read more

David de Gea no longer saves for Manchester United

first_imgNow that Manchester United has been defeated once again, we need to talk about the terrible form that Spanish goalkeeper David de Gea is going through. The match that Manchester United just finished playing against Tottenham Hotspur can be defined as a disaster, the Red Devils fell 3-0 at Old Trafford in what can be considered a historic result for Tottenham and the beginning of the end for many names inside the club. One of the most talked about players that haven’t really been delivering top quality performances is David de Gea, the Spanish goalkeeper who has gone through hell since the summer started and hasn’t really been able to recover from this unexpected situation. David de Gea used to be considered the best goalkeeper in the world just a few months ago, he was Manchester United’s most trusted life insurance and there was nothing the Red Devils couldn’t do against any rivals because they had the confidence of having a goalkeeper of his stature on their side. But something has gone very wrong somewhere down the line, De Gea is no longer the same player and the results of this dramatic level drop are starting to show a little too much.?? David De Gea’s last 16 shots faced for @ManUtd & @SeFutbol:? Saved ⚽️ Goal ⚽️ Goal ⚽️ Goal ⚽️ Goal ⚽️ Goal ⚽️ Goal ? Saved? Saved ? Saved ⚽️ Goal ⚽️ Goal ⚽️ Goal ⚽️ Goal⚽️ Goal⚽️ Goal?— SPORF (@Sporf) August 27, 2018Where it all began.David de Gea’s bad run started since the day in which Spain’s manager Julen Lopetegui was sacked from his position, that gave the Atletico Madrid product a huge responsibility because he would be the one that was going to suffer the most when a rival scored during the World Cup. De Gea’s first match was against Portugal and he got a hat-trick from Cristiano Ronaldo that was a major factor for his confidence drop as well, De Gea hasn’t really recovered since that moment. During the rest of the World Cup De Gea got a couple more goals from Morrocco, then he got another one against Russia and failed to deliver during the penalty kicks against the hosts. Spain got eventually eliminated from the tournament and David de Gea was one of the most criticized players of that competition because he was far from the level that turned him into the best goalkeeper in the world. All the Spaniard had to look forward to was Manchester United’s new season, but things have only gotten worse since he returned to action for his club.David de Gea for club & country since the start of the 2018 World Cup:• 16 shots on target faced• 12 goals concededDave needs to start saving again. ? Abraham, ChelseaChelsea hat-trick hero Tammy Abraham hopes for more Andrew Smyth – September 14, 2019 Tammy Abraham hopes this season will be his big breakthrough at Chelsea after firing his first hat-trick for the club in Saturday’s 5-2 win at Wolves.— Squawka Football (@Squawka) August 27, 2018Mourinho’s failing Manchester United. For David de Gea after returning from vacations this summer, the top priority has been to return to his former self and help out his squad winning matches. In three Premier League games after this Munday’s defeat against Tottenham Hotspur, David de Gea has received six goals already and they haven’t been his fault really but this goalkeeper used to save everything coming his way just a few months back and how his statistics have become a disaster. Just so you get an idea of what we are talking about let’s look at De Gea’s last 16 shots on target he’s received, the Spaniard has only been able to save four since the World Cup started back in June during activity between his club and country. This is an alarming stat that gives us an idea of how complicated life is right now for David, a goalkeeper who is going through a terrible moment of his career and will keep working to get past it.A disappointing night. #MUFC #MUNTOT— Manchester United (@ManUtd) August 27, 2018De Gea’s bad luck with his defenders. But it’s not just his fault that this is happening right now, there are other players who are to blame also for the goals that Manchester United receives and we consider it isn’t fair that David de Gea takes all the responsibility for these painful defeats. The Red Devils’ defensive back line is truly a disaster, they weren’t able to sign any new players on that position and they have practically been obligated to play with players of the likes of Chris Smalling or Phil Jones who are just not at the level the manager expects. In this Monday’s match against the Spurs, Jones was clearly the player to blame for Harry Kane’s goal and one of the biggest disappointments for United at Old Trafford. David de Gea could’ve done a lot more in Tottenham’s second goal that Lucas Moura scored, and there was nothing he could really do during the third and final goal that Tottenham Hotspur won at Old Trafford this Monday. I’m sorry to tell you this but, Dave no longer saves for Manchester United.Para quienes apoyasteis, criticasteis con respeto y sufristeis con nosotros, gracias. Estamos jodidos pero nos levantaremos y no dejaremos de intentarlo ??To whom supported, suffered and criticised us with respect, thanks. We’re fucked but we’ll get up again and never give up.— David de Gea (@D_DeGea) July 2, 2018What do you think David de Gea’s problem is, could it be a psychological problem or is he just going through a bad run? AG drops charge against Garvison

first_imgAt the request of the Skamania County Board of Commissioners, the state attorney general’s office has dropped a charge of official misconduct against former county auditor J. Michael Garvison. However, the charge is likely to be renewed early next year.Garvison was charged with the crime, a gross misdemeanor, for allegedly running up tens of thousands of dollars of unauthorized expenditures for travel, college tuition and office equipment during his tenure as Skamania County’s elected auditor. “The new prosecuting attorney-elect, Adam Kick, will be taking over the case after he takes office,” Commissioner Paul Pearce said last week. The three commissioners, unhappy with the plea bargain negotiated between Garvison’s attorney and the attorney general’s office, voted unanimously Nov. 2 to ask the state to return the case to the county. They noted that a new county prosecuting attorney will be free of the conflict of interest that prompted the current prosecuting attorney, Peter Banks, to refer the case to the state attorney general’s office. Banks, who was defeated for re-election in the August primary, routinely provided legal advice to the auditor’s office during Garvison’s tenure.“We do not have any additional role in the Garvison case,” Assistant Attorney General Scott Marlow told The Columbian last week. “The attorney general’s office in Washington state has very limited criminal jurisdiction. We have to be invited in by the local prosecutor. In this case, that invitation was rescinded by the local prosecutor in Skamania County. So we are done with the case, we’ve turned our files over to Skamania County, and we wish them the best of luck in pursuing the matter.”last_img read more

Two chinook now allowed in ocean salmon fishery

first_imgILWACO — Anglers may keep two chinook now as part of their two-salmon bag limit when fishing in the ocean off northern Oregon and southern Washington.Federal officials increased the daily effective Sunday between Cape Falcon in Oregon and Leadbetter Point in Washington.“When the regulations were set this spring, anglers were limited to only one chinook per day,” said Eric Schindler, ocean salmon project leader for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. “This was to ensure enough chinook were available for the full season. Catch and effort estimates through July 31 indicated that the one-chinook bag limit restriction can be lifted with little risk of having to close early.”Through July 31, only 15 percent of the chinook guideline and 20 percent of the coho quota had been taken.Salmon fishing off the Columbia River mouth opened June 26 and continues until Sept. 30 or 33,600 fin-clipped coho are caught. The bag limit at Buoy 10, the lower 16 miles of the Columbia River downstream of Tongue Point, is two adult salmon, but only one chinook, through Aug. 28.Chinook retention at Buoy 10 is prohibited beginning Aug. 29.Washington sampled 86 anglers with no salmon at Buoy 10 between Aug. 1 and 4.last_img read more
