first_imgSMITH LIKES THE LOOK OF SHARED BELIEFCHROME, HOPPERTUNITY POLAR OPPOSITESCALIFORNIA CHROME SLIGHT FAVORITELEWIS LURES SIX SOPHS ON DERBY TRAIL          BETTER ‘DYNAMICS’ IN SAN MARCOS STAKES? SHARED BELIEF ALL HEART ON THE RACE TRACKShared Belief is not much to look at. He’s no War Admiral or Zenyatta. But it’s not what’s on the hoof that counts. It’s what’s in the heart. But for a rough start in the Breeders’ Cup Classic that might have cost him victory and assuredly besmirched his unbeaten record, it wouldn’t be a stretch to say that Shared Belief could have been Horse of the Year. How could you argue with perfection? As it is, trainer Jerry Hollendorfer was quick to put the race behind him and move on, as did Shared Belief, who showed his valor and versatility by winning the seven furlong Malibu Stakes on Dec. 26 in his first start since the Classic loss on Nov. 1.            “Shared Belief is as classy as classy comes,” says Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith, who has ridden the 4-year-old gelded son of Candy Ride in his last five starts, including a neck victory in the Grade I Malibu.Smith will be aboard Shared Belief again Saturday when he tackles Horse of the Year California Chrome and seven others in the $500,000 San Antonio Invitational for older horses at 1 1/8 miles.“Shared Belief is not a big horse that you’re going to sit back on and go like Zenyatta, who was imposing just to look at,” Smith said. “He’s not really that, but he’s extremely athletic and really, really well-balanced. He’s doing well. He looks good.“They say he’s been working good. As long as Russell (Baze, who works him at Golden Gate) says he’s doing good, then I’m all right. I was glad to see that colt (Conquest Two Step) come back and win (the Palos Verdes last Saturday), if I couldn’t win it (on favored Distinctiv Passion, who finished fourth).“Conquest Two Step is the one who was 70-1 when I beat him with Shared Belief in the Malibu, and everyone said, ‘Who did Shared Belief beat?’ Well, you saw who he beat. The horse came back and demolished them in the Palos Verdes.”Shared Belief jogged and stood in the gate Thursday morning, while California Chrome galloped and stood in the gate. “He’s good,” said Hollendorfer of Shared Belief, adding he was “very happy” drawing post position five. The field for the San Antonio, race eight of nine: Hoppertunity, Martin Garcia, 4-1; Tonito M., Rafael Bejarano, 15-1; You Know I Know, Drayden Van Dyke, 30-1; Imperative, Flavien Prat, 20-1; Shared Belief, Mike Smith, 7-5; Clubhouse Ride, Aaron Gryder, 30-1; Bronzo, Gary Stevens, 20-1; California Chrome, Victor Espinoza, 6-5; and Alfa Bird, Tyler Baze, 30-1.            In other San Antonio news:For the third straight race, Hoppertunity will be breaking from the inside in theSan Antonio, having drawn post position No. 1, the same hole he had in winning the Grade I Clark Handicap Nov. 28. He captured the Grade II San Pasqual Stakes Jan. 10 breaking from post position two.“I live in the one hole,” Bob Baffert said. “I don’t know. I’m going to have to start going to the draw. I’ve always said, ‘There are two things you need to get rid of in racing: the one hole and the last race.’ I’d rather have been on the outside and clear.”On a serious note, the Hall of Fame trainer is looking forward to the San Antonio.“The horse is doing well. It’s going to be an exciting race,” said Baffert, who has won the San Antonio four times, with Congaree (2003); Richard’s Kid (2010); and Game On Dude (2012 and 2013). “It’s going to be a great racing day.”Trainer Sean McCarthy on running 7-year-old Majestic Harbor for only thesecond time on turf in 28 career starts in Saturday’s San Marcos Stakes, rather than the San Antonio: “The distance of ground (in the San Marcos, 1 ¼ miles) is more suitable for him and he’ll be running against a different type of horse.“As he’s gotten older, hopefully the grass might be more conducive.”And this nugget from HRTV’s Rich McManus: “In the Eclipse era, not since SnowChief finished third and Tasso finished fifth in the 1987 Californian have the 2-year-old champion and the 3-year-old champion, from the same crop of race horses, faced off against each other at age four.”The San Antonio will be televised nationally on Fox Sports 1. Elvis Trujillo961213813%$779,586 FINISH LINES: Two-time Eclipse Award winner Beholder “had a good open gallop today” and is about a week away from her first official workout following her scratch due to fever from the Breeders’ Cup Distaff last Oct. 31, trainer Richard Mandella said . . . Delta Jackpot winner Ocho Ocho Ocho worked four furlongs for trainer Jim Cassidy on a gorgeous Thursday morning in 49.80 for the San Felipe Stakes on March 7 . . . With three wins from his last four mounts including two on Sunday, Edwin Maldonado is back on the beam, and hopes to continue when he rides speedy Little Jerry in Saturday’s San Marcos Stakes. “I was happier than a dog with two tales,” Maldonado said after Sunday’s double. Trainer Richard Baltas on Little Jerry, who will be seeking the first stakes win of his 25-race career: “We’ll try them and see how it goes. He seems like he wants to run now. Before, he wouldn’t run unless he was on the lead. Last time he didn’t run bad. We’re taking a shot because we don’t have anywhere else to run.” Baltas added that Bing Crosby winner Big Macher came out of his disappointing showing in the Palos Verdes “perfect” and could re-surface in the $100,000 Sensational Star Stakes at about 6 ½ furlongs on turf Feb. 21. “There’s a chance he could go there,” Baltas said. “I wanted to try him on the grass because he’s out of a Kris S mare.”. . . Andy Harrington, clocker for, will be Tom Quigley‘s guest handicapper Saturday in the East Paddock Gardens at 11:20 a.m. . . . NAKATANI HOPES FOR BETTER LUCK IN SAN MARCOSCorey Nakatani is hoping for better luck on Dynamic Sky when he runs in Saturday’s Grade II San Marcos Stakes for older horses at 1 ¼ miles on turf. The son of Sky Mesa owned by John Oxley and trained by Mark Casse was beaten only two lengths while finishing sixth in the Grade II San Gabriel Stakes Jan. 3, “lacking room behind rivals in midstretch.”How tight was the finish? The eight starters were separated by only five lengths.“I was coming between horses and got cut off,” Nakatani said of the San Gabriel. “I didn’t really let him get a chance to run at the point when he needed to. He’s a real big horse. I’m looking forward to getting another opportunity.”The field for the San Marcos: Finnegans Wake, Victor Espinoza, 5-2; Patrioticandproud, Drayden Van Dyke, 4-1; Majestic Harbor, Mike Smith, 8-1; Power Ped, Flavien Prat, 9-2; Little Jerry, Edwin Maldonado, 12-1; Diamond Bachelor, Martin Pedroza, 20-1; Quadrivium, Forest Boyce, 8-1; Dynamic Sky, Corey Nakatani, 3-1; and Power Foot, Kieren Fallon, 8-1. Being such a big fan favorite is something that could come into play in the wagering. Also, California Chrome did beat Shared Belief the only time the two have met.”California Chrome finished third in the Grade I, $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic at Santa Anita last Nov. 1. Shared Belief ran fourth.“But while it’s true that Shared Belief finished 3 ½ lengths behind California Chrome in the Classic, most people, of course, feel that is a race you can throw out for Shared Belief because of all the trouble he had,” White said. “Shared Belief has lost just one time in his entire life. And if not for all of the trouble he had in the Classic, it’s entirely possible he would be nine for nine going into the San Antonio.“Something else to keep in mind is Shared Belief was the favorite in the Breeders’ Cup Classic, not California Chrome. Shared Belief was 5-2. California Chrome was 4-1. I certainly would not be surprised if it turns out that Shared Belief also ends up being the favorite in the San Antonio.”While most of the attention is being focused on California Chrome and Shared Belief, Hoppertunity goes into the Santa Antonio off victories in the Grade I Clark Handicap at Churchill Downs and Grade II San Pasqual Stakes at Santa Anita. White has pegged Hoppertunity at 4-1 for the San Antonio.“Ignore Hoppertunity at your own peril,” White cautioned.Meanwhile, White joins thousands of others in looking forward to seeing Saturday’s San Antonio.“This really is fantastic for the sport,” White said. “How great it is for the 2-year-old male champion of 2013 and the 3-year-old male champion of 2014 to meet like this? Will there be a tougher Grade II race in the entire country this year? I sure doubt it.” TrainerSts1st2nd3rdWin%Money Won Drayden Van Dyke9610111610%$605,826 Fernando Perez878879%$329,284 Victor Espinoza721213817%$740,070 Philip D’Amato3458615%$317,110 Peter Eurton3674719%$317,458 Peter Miller671216618%$727,440 Martin Garcia55812615%$817,400 Corey Nakatani6188813%$481,500 Gary Stevens4495720%$614,632 John W. Chevrolet to test waters on minicar

first_imgThe Trax resembles a muscular and boxy Mini, the BMW small car that’s found a cultlike following. Additional details on the three vehicles will be revealed the day of the New York event. Also that day, Chevrolet will open voting on the Web site,, asking people to pick their favorite of the three concepts. Chevy will use the results to gauge whether to bring a production version to America. Industry analysts see potential for carmakers to expand into the extra-small car market, especially if gasoline prices continue to rise. “Pretty much everyone is looking at entry-level cars nowadays,” said Stephanie Brinley of Southfield, Mich.-based AutoPacific Group, an automotive consulting firm. The subcompact market has only a handful of choices for consumers, said Jesse Toprak, a senior analyst with, an automotive resource tailored for consumers. “It’s a small market, but one of the fastest-growing markets,” Toprak said. Minicars are “becoming fashionable,” she said. “There is a potential, especially in the big cities on the East and West coasts, to sell minis.” Minicars offer excellent gas mileage and are easy to maneuver and park in cities, Toprak said. They will attract more customers if the price point can remain under $10,000, she added. “People will be surprised with all of the options and amenities that can come with a minicar,” Toprak said. “There’s a lot of car you can get for not a whole lot.” All three concept vehicles are built on GM’s global mini architecture.160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Chevy will use its introduction of three concept minicars – vehicles smaller than subcompacts such as the Chevrolet Aveo or Honda Fit – to gauge consumer reaction to the urban racers. Designers at GM’s studio in Inchon, South Korea, created the Chevy Trax, as well as two other minicars that will be showcased Wednesday at the New York International Auto Show. The four-door Trax is powered by a 1-liter engine. The flat-faced, burnt-orange concept includes a roof rack, sweeping headlights and small engine vents on its flared fenders. last_img read more

Assembly’s 39th goes to Fuentes

first_img“I never take anything for granted, and I was eagerly anticipating the results to avoid a runoff and to get to Sacramento as quickly as possible,” Fuentes said late Tuesday. “I’m absolutely excited and humbled that the voters decided who they wanted to represent them so quickly.” Fuentes, 35, garnered the backing of Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and was widely considered the favorite. Fuentes was chief deputy to state Sen. Alex Padilla, D-Van Nuys, when Padilla served on the City Council. Before that, Fuentes served as an aide to former Mayor James Hahn. Bonilla, 54, was the sole Republican in a heavily Democratic district. Bonilla is an internal auditor for the Los Angeles Unified School District, a job he came to recently after retiring from IBM. Democrat Felipe Fuentes eked out a win over his four challengers and will represent Panorama City and Van Nuys in the state Assembly, according to unofficial returns. Fuentes received 50.86 percent of the ballots cast for the 39th Assembly District – slightly more than the 50 percent plus one vote he needed to avert a July 10 runoff. Republican Jose Bonilla and Democrats Eric Dwight Rothenay, Felipe “Phillip” Siordia and Margie Carranza also were vying for the seat. The seat was vacated in March when Assemblyman Richard Alarc n stepped aside and returned to the Los Angeles City Council, taking advantage of an extension to term limits. Rothenay, who graduated from St. Genevieve High School in Panorama City and California State University, Northridge, works for Los Angeles County. Rothenay previously ran for the City Council seat held by Tony C rdenas. Siordia, 49, of Mission Hills formerly worked for Anheuser-Busch as a manager and now runs Brewline Coffee. Also making a second run for office was Carranza, 54, of Panorama City. The retired administrative assistant ran against Alarc n for City Council in March and said her decision to run for the Assembly was based on what she learned in that race and the urging of supporters. Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech to retire at end of season

Bio research complex proposed for harbor

first_img AD Quality Auto 360p 720p 1080p Top articles1/5READ MOREGame Center: Chargers at Kansas City Chiefs, Sunday, 10 a.m.“We have an idea, and now we need to see if we can move this as a real concept.” SCMI – a consortium comprised of the University of Southern California, Occidental College and 10 California State University campuses – has studied marine biology at the Port of Los Angeles for about 50 years. However, the agency has outgrown the 11,000-square-foot Terminal Island space that it’s occupied for 25 years. “Simply getting a new facility at this point isn’t enough,” said Anthony Michaels, president of SCMI’s board of directors. “We need to think more boldly about what we can do with this opportunity and make sure it complements efforts to make this world a better place.” Michaels said he hopes to explore a variety of topics, such as global warming, pollution, biotechnology and how large cities with busy ports – such as Los Angeles – affect marine life. SAN PEDRO – A marine biology research complex may be built as part of an effort to revitalize the Harbor Area’s economic and education base, according to a plan by Los Angeles port officials. The proposed 28-acre oceanfront laboratory at City Dock No. 1 would serve as a new home to the Southern California Marine Institute, which would likely share the space with government researchers, marine-related businesses or environmental groups, said port Executive Director Geraldine Knatz. Costs, construction timelines and potential tenants are being worked out as part of an ongoing “visioning process” funded by a $50,000 matching-fund grant from the Annenberg Foundation, Knatz said. “I’m like a clam at high tide, I’m so excited about it,” said Knatz, who formally announce her vision late Wednesday during the Los Angeles Harbor Commission meeting. On a local scale, Knatz said she would like to see the facility grow into a learning center for residents and students. “The more we brainstorm, the bigger this gets,” Knatz said. The research facility would be built on land once occupied by Westway as part of a larger effort to revive San Pedro’s waterfront with commercial and recreational space. Storage tanks on the Westway property would be dismantled and cleanup is expected to begin in about 18 months as part of a settlement the company reached last month with the city. “With the Westways agreement in place and the fact we now have the space on City Dock 1 available, we figured it was a logical place for the institute,” Knatz said. “It’s an ideal site with great views and plenty of space that’s accessible to the community.” Knatz, SCMI officials and executives with the San Pedro Peninsula Chamber of Commerce have been crafting the concept for several months with the hope of turning the idea into a “premier laboratory where the rest of the world comes for research,” said Camilla Townsend, chamber president and a former harbor commissioner. “It’s so appropriate for the largest port in North America to have a renowned marine research facility connected to it,” Townsend said. “It’s also an opportunity to bring sustainable jobs and a new work force to our community.” Advocates hope the research complex will reinvigorate economic growth in the Harbor Area by bringing back jobs that were lost when the fishing, canning and ship-building industries left the port during the 1970s. The loss of local jobs prompted local officials to rethink the future of San Pedro, according to Herb Zimmer of the San Pedro Peninsula Chamber of Commerce. “We want to bring in the creative, innovative jobs because the manufacturing jobs are long gone and don’t have a future here,” Zimmer said. “After all this time, we’ve been floundering around trying to find a new identity for the port – and here it is.” 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Ranieri keen to build on winning Fulham start

first_imgWinning against Southampton was just what the doctor ordered, with Fulham securing their first three points in the Premier League since beating Burnley at the end of August, as Claudio Ranieri made the best of managerial starts to his tenure at Craven Cottage.Life was never going to be easy for Fulham in the Premier League, but much more was expected of a club that had been one of the most active during the summer transfer window, having brought in no fewer than 14 new signings to make the side more competitive. However, the results didn’t come for Slavisa Jokanovic and after just one win in twelve games, the axe was inevitably wielded.Ranieri debuta con victoria en el Fulham— Mundo Deportivo (@mundodeportivo) November 24, 2018The subsequent arrival of Claudio Ranieri couldn’t have come at a better time, either. On the back of six straight Premier League defeats and the EFL Cup exit against Manchester City, the Italian coach managed to guide Fulham to a 3-2 victory against fellow strugglers Southampton, making for an excellent start to his tenure. The next step now will be to build momentum and maintain the positivity surrounding his arrival at the club.Despite the dream start for Ranieri, Fulham still remain amongst the favourites for relegation according to the latest EPL betting at William Hill, although a shift in the odds would suggest that bookmakers believe that if anyone can guide the team to safety, then it’s the man who stunned the football world by leading Leicester City to the 2015-16 Premier League title, making for one of the greatest underdog stories of all time.“We wanted to win, we showed very good fighting spirit,” Ranieri enthused via the official Fulham FC website, after the winning encounter with Southampton, while also pointing out that “it’s a little step” in the right direction for the team. “I want a clean sheet and want to improve our defensive work,” he also insisted, conscious of his team having conceded more goals than any other so far this season.Clearly, Ranieri remains fully aware of the difficult tests his team will face in the coming games, particularly with a run of three challenging matches within the space of just seven days to start December; a month that could give a strong indication as to how influential the 67-year-old coach may be in his new post.FT Fulham 3-2 SouthamtonIt’s a winning start for Claudio Ranieri as Fulham manager!Live text 👉 #FULSOU— BBC Sport (@BBCSport) November 24, 2018The first stop is Stamford Bridge for a tussle with Chelsea, a location Ranieri knows all too well after his stint with the Blues between September 2000 and May 2004. Next is a home encounter against the club where his remarkable Premier League title was achieved, Leicester City, which will undoubtedly be filled with emotion. Fulham then take on Manchester United at Old Trafford, as Ranieri locks horns with Jose Mourinho, the man who replaced him at Chelsea back in 2004.Fulham end 2018 with matches against West Ham, Newcastle United, Wolves and Huddersfield Town; all of whom are also currently in the bottom half of the table. Direct rivals against which Ranieri will be keen to secure as many points as possible, hopeful that by the time his side take on Arsenal to start 2018, the team will be sat in a far more comfortable position in the Premier League table.
