PALO ALTO, Calif. — A week after revealing a huge first quarter loss and the need to raise cash, Tesla is doing just that with CEO Elon Musk buying $10 million in new shares being offered as part of a stock and debt offering that could raise more than $2 billion.Tesla said Thursday that it’s selling $650 million of common stock and $1.35 billion in convertible senior notes due in 2024 in two separate offerings. The company is giving the underwriters a 30-day option to purchase up to an additional 15% of each offering. That would add up to about $2.3 billion before discounts and expenses and if the underwriters fully exercise their options.Last week, Tesla reported its cash balance at the end of the first quarter shrunk by $1.5 billion since December, to $2.2 billion. Musk said during a conference call that Tesla might need to raise capital again. The offering will give it enough liquidity to pay $566 million in notes that mature in November, plus provide cash to expand distribution of Tesla’s Model 3 in Europe and cover any spending needed from softening demand for all three of Tesla’s models in the U.S., Moody’s Senior Vice-President Bruce Clark said Thursday in a statement.Still, Moody’s kept a negative outlook and B3 rating on Tesla debt. That is six notches below investment grade. In a March 30 note, the ratings agency wrote that the Model 3, Tesla’s lowest-price model, currently sells for an average of $55,000. To increase sales, the price has to drop toward $42,000, and to make enough money to pay the bills, Tesla has targeted a 25% gross profit margin on the Model 3, Moody’s said. Currently gross profits on a $42,000 Model 3 are “materially” below 25%, according to Moody’s.“In order to achieve this margin target the company will have to undertake significant reductions in fixed and variable costs associated with the vehicle,” Moody’s wrote. “We expect that it will be a major challenge for Tesla to aggressively increase production/deliveries, shift the product mix toward the $42,000 price level, and simultaneously lower costs enough to achieve the 25% gross margin target.”The Palo Alto, California-based Tesla lost $702.1 million in the first quarter, among its worst quarters in two years. Sales tumbled 31% in the period. Musk predicted another loss in the second quarter but said Tesla would be profitable again by the third quarter. The surprisingly large loss followed the company’s first back to back quarters of profitability.Tesla has lost more than $6 billion since setting out to revolutionize the auto industry. Musk expects that future profits will be driven by rising sales and the arrival of autonomous vehicles dedicated to a new ride-hailing service.Shares of Tesla Inc. closed Thursday up 4.3% at $244.10.The Associated Press

Ms Cullen’s letter, which the Mirror publishes in full, details how she felt “so excited” when she joined BHS in 2010 while at sixth-form college.“It felt like I had joined a great team, but sadly now that has all now been broken up, mainly because of your management, or indeed lack of it. Ms Cullen accuses Green of destroying an “iconic part of the British High Street which could easily have been saved.”“I wish the best for everyone who worked for BHS,” her letter concludes. “It survived so long because of them, people who actually cared for it and treated it like it mattered, not you.“I hope you will one day realise the pain and damage you have caused to such a faithful group of people. It is them you have betrayed.”While some of the crew of the yacht, named Lionheart, came outside to listen to Ms Cullen, Green remained ensconced inside, declining the opportunity to meet with his former employee. After the final BHS stores pulled down their shutters for the last time at the weekend, one former staff member traveled to Capri in order to confront ex-boss Sir Philip Green.Hannah Cullen, from Ware in Hertfordshire, traveled hundreds of miles to deliver an angry tirade to the multi-millionaire businessman, who has been criticised for his handling of the company.A Daily Mirror video shows Ms Cullen, 23, using a loudhailer aboard a small dinghy adjacent to Green’s yacht.“Sir Philip Green, my name is Hannah Cullen and I’ve come here to give you a letter,” she calls. “Would you please come out so I can hand it to you. “Over the last six years I’ve watched this once great company fall apart.” “I’m a former employee of BHS and I’ve been made redundant because of you and your actions.“You’re hiding cowardly on your boat, while thousands of people are struggling to find work.“You’re a coward, and I’d like to come and see you to give you the letter.” Credit:Reuters This is the yacht Lionheart today near Capri, owned by one Philip Green. pic.twitter.com/o2ibD1OHaz— Nick Thompson (@Scoobysnax23) 30 August 2016

Mr Mease said: “No-one else could have done it quicker.”He denied hunting for sport and described himself as a pest controller.District Judge John Woollard said he had heard no evidence the hunt had made any changes to their activities – other than using the falconer – since the hunting act was introduced in 2005.Joe Bird, prosecuting, alleged that the eagle was used as a “smokescreen” to allow the hunt to continue as it had before the law was changed. He said: “The set up was never going to work. It was a smokescreen.”There were so many occasions when they would not have been able to fly the eagle.”Stephen Welford, defending both men, said: “There is video footage of Mease using his eagle to kill a fox. That would not exist if it was a smokescreen.”Judge Woollard said it was clear Adams had no control over the hounds during the hunt.He was fined £1,000 and ordered to pay a £100 victim surcharge and £930 costs.Hunt Saboteurs Association spokesperson Lee Moon said after the trial: “To anyone who witnessed the events on the day in question it was abundantly clear that a wild mammal was hunted and killed illegally, in a most gruesome manner. “The loopholes and exemptions in the current act have always been cynically exploited by hunts in order to operate much as they would have done prior to the ban.”Adrian Simpson, from the Countryside Alliance, said they believed the judge had made the wrong decision, and said Adams was planning to appeal. The court was also shown headcam footage from Mr Mease taken in November 2013, when he used the golden eagle to catch a fox.He then used a falconers knife to kill the animal by driving the spike through its eye.It took him 47 seconds to kill the fox from the moment it was caught by the eagle. A falconer has been cleared of breaching strict hunting laws because he hunts foxes using a golden eagle.John Mease, 45, was found not guilty after a court heard he used the bird of prey to catch animals as opposed to a pack of dogs.He was further cleared of causing unnecessary cruelty to an animal despite “dispatching” a fox by driving a knife through its eye after it was caught by his raptor in 2013.George Adams, 66, a co-accused Fitzwilliam huntsman, was convicted of using hounds to kill a fox on January 1 2016.Peterborough Magistrates Court was filled with supporters of the hunt and hunt saboteurs during the two-day trial.Magistrates heard that the hunt’s hounds were used to flush the fox out into the open before the eagle was meant to be released to catch the fleeing mammal. Adams, who joined the Fitzwilliam Hunt in 1981 and became a huntsman in 1984, said he had not seen the fox before it was killed. When asked if it was his intention to kill the fox with hounds, he said: “Absolutely not. We wanted to flush it out for the bird of prey.”Mr Mease told the court there was no chance for him to release his golden eagle because the saboteurs were in the field.Asked why he did not radio Adams to call the hunt off, he said: “A hunt is a fluid thing. It was changing minute by minute.”It was the heat of the moment and it was the first time I had come across saboteurs in my 11 years.”He told the court he was in charge of the bird but had no control over the pack of hounds, which was Adams’ responsibility. John Mease, member of the Fitzwilliam Hunt Credit:Peterborough Telegraph / SWNS Video footage filmed by Stephen Milton, a hunt saboteur, showed the 40-hound hunt in a field near Wansford, Cambs, and picked up the sound of a hunting horn.Mr Milton said he did not hear anyone from the hunt calling the dogs off the fox after they picked up its scent. The fox was killed by the pack of hounds and Mr Mease’s golden eagle was not released.

There are many who claim that people are no longer interested in politics. One reason given for this point of view is the claim that representative democracy is too remote from people’s everyday lives and that there are no real differences between the major Australian parties in terms of policies and how they may impact on our lives. This point of view, however, does not appear to be shared by Neos Kosmos readers who voted on our online poll last week by answering the question: “Do you believe that the outcome of the 2013 Australian election will impact on your life?” Seven out of ten respondents indicated that the election result on September 7 will impact their lives. This result can be seen, amongst others, as a reflection of a Greek cultural trait, since the public sphere, public life and politics are highly valued within the Greek culture. This week’s poll question: “Will you be celebrating Father’s Day on Sunday 1 September? Yes or No?” Vote now at www.neoskosmos.com Facebook Twitter: @NeosKosmos Instagram

Four Haines residents survived a plane crash yesterday afternoon and swam through 5-foot seas to get to the rocky shore. Three were released from a Juneau hospital while the fourth is still in critical condition in Seattle.Download AudioThe privately owned Cessna 180 went down shortly before 2 p.m. and crashed into Lynn Canal near Eldred Rock, about 50 miles north of Juneau and 30 miles from Haines.Eldred Rock, looking east. (Pam Randles). Shared via KHNS.org.The U.S. Coast Guard got the request for assistance at 1:45 p.m. on Wednesday, according to Petty Officer Meredith Manning. The Federal Aviation Administration heard the mayday call from the pilot, identified by Alaska State Troopers as Michael Mackowiak. Mackowiak reported that the plane’s engine had died while flying to Haines from Juneau. The plane crashed into Lynn Canal and the four swam to the rocky beach north of Berners Bay on the east side of the canal, in the vicinity of Eldred Rock.A Coast Guard MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter was dispatched and picked up three passengers, while a TEMSCO helicopter picked up the fourth person. All were brought to Juneau. Manning said seas at the time of the crash were at 5 feet while winds were around 28 miles per hour. The call came in at 1:45 and the four were located by rescuers at 3:25 p.m.Here’s Manning talking about the scene when rescuers arrived.“All four of the survivors had swam to shore and the plane was no longer visible in the water.”The Coast Guard also diverted a 45-foot response boat from Juneau. All passengers were seen at Bartlett Regional Hospital, but one was later transferred to a Seattle hospital, while the other three were treated and released on Wednesday evening.Harborview Medical Center spokesperson Susan Gregg said Thursday morning that Martha Mackowiak is still in critical condition in the intensive care unit. Gregg said Martha is receiving round-the-clock care and monitoring.Troopers said they received a call from TEMSCO shortly after 2 p.m. that it was in the process of responding to a downed aircraft. Troopers confirmed Michael and Martha were on board along with two juveniles, all of Haines.Shaun Williams is the lead investigator from the National Transportation Safety Board charged with looking into the crash. He said Thursday morning that once the search and rescue aspect of the accident was over, he began the initial phase of the investigation into why the plane went down. Collecting evidence is a challenge as the plane is currently submerged in Lynn Canal.“The NTSB does not do recovery. That’s up to whether or not there was insurance or up to the individual if they wish to go after the aircraft,” Williams said.Williams said without the plane to comb through, he will conduct interviews, look at maintenance records and the pilot’s flight history to get more clues into the probable cause.“And trying to recreate as much of the information as possible as far as how the airplane was configured, what sounds, what vibrations, if any, that sort of thing.”If the plane is recovered, Williams said he will travel to Juneau to inspect it.“It’s a big puzzle and we have try and put all the pieces together to backtrack and find out what happened and what caused this aircraft to impact water,” he said.Williams said a preliminary report will be released in five to 10 days and a factual report in six to 12 months.
Yahoo Inc (YHOO.O), under pressure from impatient investors, took steps on Friday to handle the possible sale of parts of the struggling Internet company.Yahoo shares jumped after the company announced its board has formed a committee of independent directors to explore strategic alternatives. This signaled Yahoo is open to selling its core business including search, mail and news sites, rather than spin it off as previously planned.Yahoo advisers started working on the sale process on Friday, people familiar with the matter said. The step followed more than three years of effort by CEO Marissa Mayer to turn around Yahoo, focusing on mobile apps and trying to boost advertising revenue.Despite her efforts, revenue has dipped since she took the helm in July 2012.Yahoo shares rose 2.26 percent to $30.09 in midday trading. The announcement came as activist investors appeared to be preparing for a possible proxy fight for control of the board.Starboard, which owns about 0.75 percent of Yahoo, has been pushing for changes since 2014, asking it to separate its Asian assets and sell the core business. On Wednesday, Bloomberg reported that Starboard was taking initial steps toward a potential proxy fight.”It seems pretty clear that the only reason this is happening even is because of the threat of the proxy fight,” Pivotal Research analyst Brian Wieser said.Yahoo said the newly formed committee and its advisers are working on a process for reaching out to and engaging with potentially interested strategic and financial parties.Earlier this month, Yahoo dealt with interested parties individually, without running a formal auction process, according to people familiar with the matter.Yahoo announced this month it was considering strategic alternatives for its core Internet business, after shelving previous plans to spin off its stake in ecommerce giant Alibaba Group Holding Ltd (BABA.N).”Separating our Alibaba stake from Yahoo’s operating business is essential to maximizing value for our shareholders,” Mayer said on Friday.Starboard was not immediately available for comment.”I think a proxy fight would be the right thing to do,” said investor SpringOwl Asset Management’s Managing Director Eric Jackson.Yahoo’s board is concerned about the risk of losing a possible proxy contest, he said. The committee has engaged Goldman Sachs & Co Inc, J.P. Morgan and PJT Partners Inc as financial advisers, and Cravath, Swaine & Moore LLP as legal adviser.Verizon Communications Inc (VZ.N) is among the companies seen as a potential buyer of Yahoo’s core business.
His name was proposed by Prime Minister Modi and was backed by all major parties.Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP OM Birla was elected as the speaker of the 17th Lok Sabha on Wednesday, June 19. His name was proposed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and was backed by all major parties including Biju Janata Dal, Shiv Sena, YSRCP and AIADMK.PM Modi also congratulated Birla after his election, saying that he and Birla have worked together as BJP workers, and Birla has been serving the public without a break for years.”It is a matter of great pride for the House and we all congratulate Om Birla Ji on being unanimously elected as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha. Many MPs know Birla Ji well. He has served in the state of Rajasthan as well,” Modi said.Birla, a two-time BJP MP from the Kota-Bundi constituency in Lok Sabha, defeated Congress’s Ramnarayan Meena with a margin of over 2.5 lakh votes in the recently concluded Lok Sabha election.Other prominent names of senior BJP parliamentarians like Maneka Gandhi, Radha Mohan Singh and Virender Kumar were also in contention for the post of Lok Sabha speaker. But Birla, who has been associated with the BJP since his youth, working as a representative in the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha, had a total of 13 motions moved in his support, and was unanimously elected as the speaker.

Arun JaitleyPIB IndiaUnion Finance Minister Arun Jaitley’s official announcement over the implications of GST and his statement on Sunday has saddened filmmakers and movie buffs across India.Ever since Arun Jaitley announced GST, people across the country were confused over the implications of the revised tax rates, especially prices of movie tickets. Arun Jaitley held the GST Council meeting on Sunday, and later in the afternoon, addressed the media.Read: Gold is cold: Jewellers fear GST might tarnish profits of the sectorThe Union Finance Minister said there would be two taxation slabs for movie tickets. Those priced under Rs 100 will come under the slab of 18 percent, while the base price of tickets over Rs 100 will fall under the 28 percent slab. So no real win. Now will have 2 wait TN govt g.o 4 clarity.”The film critic added: “In Chennai if TN govt waives current 30% tax and says RS 120 will be the new Net + GST 28%, then a Sathyam can charge Rs 153.60. #GST Big + for theatres selling ticket below RS 100. An #AVMRajeshwari paying 30% tax on their highest Rs 50 ticket, now will cost RS 64. Now the ball is clearly in the court of TN govt. The #EPS Sarkar as per their track record will follow the rules set by Central govt.”Film-goers noted that there are hardly a few theatres which charge less than Rs 100 for a ticket, while no multiplex will charge less than Rs 100. Some felt that the government decision would give rise to torrent sites and piracy, which would cause losses to the already struggling Indian film industry. ReutersWith a great deal of talk about Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s future doing the rounds, a very prominent Indian voice, and the most beautiful one arguably, has asked the veteran cricketer to not hang up his boots and continue representing India. In a tweet, the Lata Mangeshkar, the most famous playback singer of the country, wrote: “Namaskar M S Dhoni ji. Aaj kal main sun rahi hun ke aap retire hona chahte hain. Kripaya aap aisa mat sochiye. Desh ko aap ke khel ki zaroorat hai aur ye meri bhi request hai ki retirement ka vichar bhi aap mann mein mat laayiye.” (“These days, I am hearing that you want to retire. Please don’t think like this. The country needs your skills and it is my request also that you don’t allow the thought of retirement to enter your mind.”)The Bharat Ratna awardee is not a frequent tweeter and only expresses her views on social media on rare occasions. The fact that she felt the need to address MSD and express, in such a respectful manner, her desire to see him continue as an Indian player makes this appeal very special, perhaps at par with any complement that Dhoni has got in his career. Let’s see if Mahi responds to her.

Tesla builds some of the safest vehicles on the roads. Unfortunately, a vehicle that helps passengers survive a crash sometimes has to sacrifice itself in order to protect them. One German Model S owner learned that the hard way this week. Though he’s no doubt thankful that his teenage child and four passengers survived a spectacular accident, he’s probably also wishing his six-figure sedan didn’t look like like it had been used for a chase scene in a buddy cop film.According to a police report, the teenage driver lost control of the car going into a curve, hit an embankment, and launched it into a freshly-plowed farmer’s field. It rolled once along the way and eventually came to a stop around 80 feet from where it veered off the road. All five passengers were able to exit the vehicle despite having sustained some pretty serious injuries. Some reports are praising the Model S and Tesla’s skateboard design as a result, but there’s more to it than the fact that the teens were riding in an “inherently safe car.” Thankfully, there was nothing in the landing area that could have ruptured the Tesla’s hundred-kilo lithium battery or any obstructions (like trees) that it could have run into, because things could have been much, much worse. And it’s not like it was a Tesla that three Arizona teens who survived accidentally driving over a 100-foot cliff. Turns out there are a lost of really safe cars on our roads these days.Image: Sabine Hermsdorf

Impostor planet exposed by astronomers Journal information: Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society (Phys.org)—Using the gravitational microlensing method, an international team of astronomers has recently detected a new gas giant exoplanet three times more massive than Jupiter. The newly discovered planet received designation OGLE-2014-BLG-0676Lb and is an important addition to the short list of extrasolar worlds detected by the microlensing technique. The discovery was described in a paper published Dec. 12 on arXiv.org. Citation: Astronomers discover new gas giant exoplanet (2016, December 14) retrieved 18 August 2019 from https://phys.org/news/2016-12-astronomers-gas-giant-alien-world.html More information: N. J. Rattenbury et al. Faint source star planetary microlensing: the discovery of the cold gas giant planet OGLE-2014-BLG-0676Lb, Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society (2016). DOI: 10.1093/mnras/stw3185 , On Arxiv: https://arxiv.org/abs/1612.03511AbstractWe report the discovery of a planet —- OGLE-2014-BLG-0676Lb —- via gravitational microlensing. Observations for the lensing event were made by the MOA, OGLE, Wise, RoboNET/LCOGT, MiNDSTEp and μFUN groups. All analyses of the light curve data favour a lens system comprising a planetary mass orbiting a host star. The most favoured binary lens model has a mass ratio between the two lens masses of (4.78±0.13)×10−3. Subject to some important assumptions, a Bayesian probability density analysis suggests the lens system comprises a 3.09+1.02−1.12 M_jup planet orbiting a 0.62+0.20−0.22 M_sun host star at a deprojected orbital separation of 4.40+2.16−1.46 AU. The distance to the lens system is 2.22+0.96−0.83 kpc. Planet OGLE-2014-BLG-0676Lb provides additional data to the growing number of cool planets discovered using gravitational microlensing against which planetary formation theories may be tested. Most of the light in the baseline of this event is expected to come from the lens and thus high-resolution imaging observations could confirm our planetary model interpretation. Unlike other methods of detecting exoplanets, microlensing is most sensitive when it comes to searching for exoworlds that orbit around one to 10 AU away from their host stars. These planets are of special interest for astronomers studying planetary formation theories due to proximity to their parent stars, within the so-called “snow line.” Just beyond this line, the most active planet formation occurs; therefore, understanding the distribution of exoplanets in this region could offer important clues to how planets form.So far, 47 planets have been discovered by microlensing. Currently, several ground-based observation programs routinely monitor dense stellar fields to search for microlensing events. When a new event is discovered, an alert to the broader scientific community is issued in order to allow follow-up observations. Astronomers are particularly interested in events showing evidence for perturbations that could be due to the presence of a planet, or which are predicted to have a high sensitivity to such perturbations.OGLE-2014-BLG-0676, discovered in April 2014 by a Polish astronomical project called the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE), is one of those interesting microlensing events. Recently, a collaboration of researchers consisting of the OGLE group, the Microlensing Observations in Astrophysics (MOA), the Wise Observatory Group and the Microlensing Network for the Detection of Small Terrestrial Exoplanets (MiNDSTEp), has detected an anomalous signal in this event consistent with a planetary lens system.”The source star passed through the central caustic, with the second caustic crossing being well recorded by the MOA microlensing survey collaboration. Observations at epochs between the unrecorded first caustic crossing and the second caustic crossing were made by the OGLE, Wise and MOA collaborations. (…) All analyses of the light curve data favor a lens system comprising a planetary mass orbiting a host star,” the paper reads.According to the research, the newly discovered planet has a mass of about 3.1 Jupiter masses and orbits its parent star at a deprojected orbital separation of about 4.4 AU. The host star is approximately 38 percent less massive than our sun and was classified as a K-dwarf. The distance to the lens system is about 7,200 light years. Moreover, the team revealed some information about the source star. They revealed that is rather faint and very red, noting that there is a possibility that the source may be blended with a nearby red star, causing an incorrect identification of the source star type.In conclusion, the scientists emphasize the importance of their discovery, noting that OGLE-2014-BLG-0676Lb could serve as a test bed for planet formation scenarios. “Planet OGLE-2014-BLG-0676Lb can be added to the growing list of planets discovered by microlensing against which planetary formation theories can be tested,” the researchers wrote in the paper.
MORELIA, Mexico – Mexican authorities are conducting DNA tests on a girl who may be the daughter of a Texas woman afterthe wrong child was forcibly sent to the United States last month. In April, police seized 14-year-old Alondra Luna Núñez inside her school and sent her to Houston after a woman had mistakenly identified her as a daughter she had not seen in eight years.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oF9Xse4qiDwDNA tests conducted later in Texas showed she was the wrong girl and she was sent back to her real parents in Mexico’s central state of Guanajuato. In a bid to avoid another embarrassing mixup, authorities in Mexico are now awaiting DNA tests on a second girl identified as Alondra. The girl’s father took her to her paternal grandmother in the western state of Michoacán on Saturday, an official in the regional supreme court told AFP.The father, Reynaldo Díaz, delivered the girl after reaching an agreement with the mother, Dorotea García, to “withdraw any charges against him,” the official said. The case dates back to 2007, when Mexican authorities received García’s request for help to return her daughter, whose father brought her to the country from the United States.“I’m happy because I will be able to see my mother,” Alondra told Univision television.Mexican prosecutors have opened an investigation into the actions of authorities, including a judge in Michoacán who had ordered officials to send the wrong Alondra to Texas.García mistook the Guanajuato girl for her daughter because they share a similar scar between the eyebrows.
